Hello all,

As many as you know, I work for PHR (Phoenix Hummer Repair) and we have been working on a complete frame restoration. Parts of the body and motor weren’t touched as it’ll be a later project as the customer enjoys their truck for the time being.

The truck came in due to a rusted out frame, which a lower control arm partially sheared from the frame from a low speed rearend. Shortly after getting it back from another shop for aftermarket goodies. Pictures below show the poor condition of the frame and parts.

I think everyone gets the point, there was a desperate need to correct the rust and deterioration of parts.

On the frame used for this restoration, we sanded down the frame rails to smoothen out its galvanized coating so there was a nice even finish after powder coat. Here is the frame in its early build phases

While the truck came in for a frame replacement/restoration, we were shortly after tasked with making reused parts look good. This took up a huge chunk of the total restoration. But the payoff was well worth the time spent removing, cleaning, painting, and fixing if necessary.

Below is just a sample of the parts we reconditioned/repaired. We sent out a bunch of additional parts to powder coat in order match the frame. The parts that didn’t get sent out were reconditioned in house.

I have just shy of 1,000 photos from
this entire process to both show the customer progress and to post here. I hope the photos here show the meticulous attitude we took. If not, I can post more :). Next up is reassembly and setting the body down onto the chassis.

Reassembly and the final stage of the truck is one of my favorite moments in all of this. When you tear apart an H1 you’re thinking in the back of your head that there’s no way this all goes back together right. But in reality it’s just one nut and bolt at a time.

Featured are Midwest military lift coil springs, cepek adjustable shocks, stage 8 locking spindle nuts and PHR 3” body lift.

Entire suspension and portal hubs assembled. Next up is putting the chassis under the body!

As the chassis being decently assembled, we still needed to keep the body off the frame to complete other tasks. Such as CTIS lines, re wrapping wiring harnesses and fixing anything else that will be impossible once the body is lowered onto the frame for the final time.

This is the stage where everything combines, connects, blends and comes together. Or what I like to call, the trouble phase.

When you disconnect all systems, then bring them all back together, there will always be a time period of trouble shooting and figuring out issues. This was that stage. Further restoration ensues, we reconditioned even more parts on the body from customer request.

Since this truck featured our body lift, and the fact we needed to source an auxiliary fuel tank. We landed on a new old stock alpha fuel tank, there were some modifications needed such as the extension of the pickup tube to accommodate the upgraded capacity. Also featured are restored fuel plate senders for both main and aux tanks.

Final stage includes driving the truck out of its bay, and test drives. (Video to come later).
I may be skewed, but I think think this truck came out exactly how we wanted it to.

Customer took delivery of this truck on Friday last week. While he really enjoyed the ride quality, appeal, workmanship. He said he’ll be bringing it back in for PHR performance modifications shortly.

Very nice. Hopefully he stays out of the surf or salted roads from now on. Roughly what was the bill on this restoration?

The new owner will be taking much better care. This much damage and it had less than 30,000 original miles.

All in for parts and labor was ~60k. Some parts would show up then disappear from market, so to get it on time there was some expense. Overall a big learning curve

Nice to see new life breathed into a truck.

Parts can be crazy, I got held up for months with parts issue with my rock ram installation, I'm about to get my truck back on the road :)

Should have gone with PSC's solution with Rubberduck for the steering stuff but eh.. live and learn.
