Rock Lights ~ kit or build your own?

Shouldn't this be in the Mall Crawler thread?

Really. I have seen this bouncing around for a while now. I guess I am just too old to understand.

1. You go off-road over large irregularly shaped rocks at night?
2. You don't ever get the underside of your wheel wells covered in mud/snowy slush? (Those little lights will be useless covered by 1/2 inch of dirt).
3. All for show = Mall Crawler

OK, flame away, but remember, I am old and crusty.

:corn:

Do you not like to look out your side window and see whats under you or to the side of you when your day wheeling? Even if there aren't large irregular shaped rocks there. I know i do. Do you ever leave stuff on your lap, hop out of your car at night and have to find your cell phone (if that's not what you dropped) to find what you did drop? I often do. They are also helpful if you ever pull into camp a little passed sun down and have to set up in the dark, they light up the whole area around and under your car. There are plenty of other spots to mount them other than your wheel wells that don't get caked in dirt/mud/slush/snow. Also like tim was stating, if your doing slow night wheeling you pretty much only need to run your park lamps and rock lights to see just fine.

I haven't wired any up yet on my 3, but it will most likely be the next mod i do to my "mall crawler". :)

These are also great for looking out for zombies. you can see under your truck, so they cannot hide.

I made the harness for these, I just need to get my skids and front bumper mounted up 1st. In hooking them all up and turning them on in the garage at night, It was pretty damn bright in there. these will be perfect for camping. I may make some brackets to angle them out a little too. The beam pattern is wide enough though, so I may not have to. I found spots all up above the frame, so they should not get hit by rocks/ debris as it would inside a wheelwell. looking forward to seeing how this will turn out.

I got 6 of the 8 mounted up and put power to them. hard to tell since I looked at them in teh garage. Very bright, white light. 6 is "ok" in my mind. I went with 8 and I think that's teh perfect number for an H3/ JK sized truck. I think a longer H2 would be good with 8, but to get that "overkill lighting effect" you would need maybe one or two more under there. once I get the last 2 hooked up, I'll get some pics. the entire ground under the JK is lit up well. the light does not protrude out away from teh vehicle though. If I mounted them out further or angled them, they certainly would, however I decided to keep them up high so they do not get ripped off in mud, water, rock, etc. the connectors DO require a heatgun. It ook a lot to get that solder ring to melt..to the point I had to be careful not to melt the wires not covered by the heat shrink on those fittings.

The toughest part is routing your wires away from exhaust. once you figure that out, it was just took time to put the wireloom on and ziptie everything into place. I have about 5 hours into this porject so far...and i'm about 70% done. I still have to mount up switch wires and the last 2 pods yet.
