Seat troubles...

Hey all!

I had my bottom driver's seat cover replaced (under warranty) about a month ago because the combo of my big behind and the sharp edges of the plastic wore a hole in it. Well, the seat cover is in good shape now; however, the foam and left-hand bolster are, like, separating from the frame and it flops up when I climb into the truck so that I have to preemptively hold it down when I climb in or else it would like peel up. My best guess is the tech probably did not re-install the seat cover properly. I can't be too upset with the dealer -- I've watched enough car shows on tv to see what a PITA seats can be to upholster/work on.

I hate to sound like a drama queen right now, but I really am too busy with the last 30 days or so I have of senior year to want to take it in to the dealer again and deal with waiting, and swapping cars, and yadda yadda... Once I'm outta school I can take it back in. I was poking around with it today and I couldn't figure anything out (big surprise...). In the meantime, does anybody have an idea of how I can fix/alleviate the situation? ...And no, losing 40lbs is not a viable option right now!

Anywho...lay it on me! The area circled is where the seat cushion has come undone.

Lose 30 lbs. :)

You don't have to be a PITA with the dealer but you can go back and ask if this is "normal". You don't have to say they screwed up but you don't have to accept an incomplete repair either. There are other big guys on here and I haven't heard of this being an issue, which means it is an issue for the truck and GM and should be addressed under warranty.

If you don't have time now just bear with it. Adding your own "repair" might make it harder for warranty work later.

It's very likely that the padding/ underlayment of the seat was not replaced when the cover was replaced. There are parts under the seat cover that need to be replaced. I thought at one time that it might be possible to switch right and left seat bottoms to even out the wear. These seats are right and left specific. I was able to swap right and left seats in one of our work Astro vans at one time. It worked well in that instance.

Take your H3 to a local custom interior shop. They can fix it....make it however you want it for much less money and hassle than GM.

Seat cover helps to retain the pad to the frame usually via a J-strip or hog rings. Sounds like an easy fix, once you get to it. But J-strips are a PI the A and Hog rings take a special tool.

Did they replace the foam too? They should have. If you wore a hole in the trim cover then you would have seriously damaged the foam beyond repair at that point. I would ask the dealer to try and order up a new pad and replace it. You can do the work yourself, but it would be easier with the seat out of the truck. You can probably find a manual hog wring wrench at Harbor Freight or automotive tool supplier, the air powered ones are better, but I have built enough seats by hand that you can do a pretty good job with the manual type.

My problem with my seats is that my wife or daughter keep turning on the dang seat heater that comes with the alpha -- My wife did that in my other car that has not had the seat heater used and a puff of smoke came up right in front of her..... Those seat heaters are a bad idea for men.

I take that there are few choices (if any) for aftermarket seating for us H3 owners? I have not really checked into this aspect of Hummer yet.
