Great post Bigunit and 3hummers. The only thing I would add is the Jackwagens that beat the snot out of their rigs,or don't do the proper maintenance. Then they get on the inter web and blame their own stupidity on the MFG and or the dealer.

I am sorry I cannot stand up and support a brand that has failed me so many times. Ive owned three H3s, two of them have had to have the head replaced and plastic shifter fork under 80,000 miles. Both of the heads were rejected by GM to be replaced. If I had the same motor in a colorado I would have been fine... multiple GM (one former Hummer) dealers told me my plastic shifter fork was functioning fine even after calling one of GM's inspectors to test the vehicle. I had to sign a work slip saying if they took the transfercase apart and it was fine I would have to pay for reassembly. I fully agreed and sure enough both H3s had completely destroyed plastic shifter forks. GM still said this was not a design flaw and would not cover it. Thankfully I had an aftermarket warranty on all three of my H3s. Don't even get me started on tierods (I had stock tires when they snapped) or the host of other electrical gremlins I have dealt with. They are cool vehicles don't get me wrong and I will probably be buying another one this spring to tinker with but the problem I have is with GM rejecting to work with loyal hummer owners on issues that are KNOWN to be a problem for many of us.

I will attempt to answer your question:
There is no such thing as a perfect 4x4 in my opinion. Even when my H1 was stock, I was having problems bending brand new parts. Engineers and designers drop the ball all the time with every brand. All this bitching and complaining has provided critical information for some people to take the initiative and opportunity to fix the problems. In my opinion, the real problem (and what gets my blood boiling), is unquestioning brand loyalty. That is what led to the phrase, "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand," and what allows Jeep to keep delivering essentially the same POS year after year. I tend to favor GM and think all Hummers are really neat, but when you start looking at the details, it makes you shake your head.

the problem with bringing back hummer is that's going to throw a huge wrench in collecting and building all 3 models.

If I had brand loyalty I'd be driving a Jeep. No brand is perfect, no vehicle has a perfect record with zero issues. Companies are in it for the money, everything is a compromise. However, I do think GM is actually pretty good. High end sports car - one of the Corvette variations would be my top choice, new SUV - a Tahoe, hybrid - without a doubt the Volt is the only hybrid I'd consider, muscle car - Camaro. Their economy, sedan, etc. offerings are pretty boring and I doubt I'd choose a GM.

Point is, GM can build a good vehicle and if they do come out with a real off road vehicle how good it is will depend on what they think the market will bear and what price point they make compromises to hit. It's not a question of if they CAN build a great vehicle, it's a question of if they will.

To the issue of GM abandoning Hummer owners, that seems to be a question of which dealership you go to. The Cadillac dealership I was going to for factory warranty work was great. No questions asked, loaner cars, full vehicle inspection looking for other parts that may need replaced.

same experience, I get great help from the guys at Moore, they're always willing to help out, order parts, and do as much as they can to help. although i wouldn't doubt it for a second if some dealerships weren't as caring

I have said, and still believe, that I'd rather if my H2 said GMC on the front for the reasons you describe. Also, had the H2/H3 been under the GMC brand (or even Chevy) that there would be a much better chance for a next gen H2/H3.

i kind of like that the hummers are hummer and not GMC. then you get more interesting styling. i suppose if they ever do bring back an H2, i'll be just like those guys who want a body kit that will make a camaro look like a trans am.

I'd you need evidence of the demand for the brand, look at prices for late model H2s. There is demand for these trucks, but GM won't resuscitate the brand. It's sad, it's unfair, but it's life. GM is a giant corporate being, and they care waaay more about moving 100k Buick Encores than 20k Hummers.

I'm afraid in 20 years, those of us who might still have/drive a Hummer will be seen as eccentrics--like people who love Fieros and Edsels and Messerschmits. Nothing wrong with it, but we'll be automotive history.

This whole idea creates some big questions for me.

1. Why would GM not sell the Hummer brand? I know the deals fell through and all, but it seems that the rights to the Hummer brand are not on the market.. thats like $100m in GM's back pocket not doing anything...

2. GMC needs/wants to make their own vehicle. i.e. none of this rebadged chevy stuff.

3. GM needs a vehicle to tap into the jeep market.

GMC should build upon the HX concept and move it into production. Hopefully a nice 300hp v6 with 25 hwy mpg and a diesel option. (This would directly compete with the 2 door wrangler)


GMC should also build a new version of the H3 with the same 300hp v6, and diesel option. (this would obviously compete with the wrangler unlimited)


In my opinion, they don't need to build anything similar to an H2... atleast not any time soon.

I just looked it up and the new canyon and colorados have a 305hp v6... hmmmm

We all almost slid off that shale shelf. Strange feeling - I just gave it a little more gas to keep traction and the tires moving uphill on that trail on the side of that mountain because the idea of not making it up was a pretty nasty and a big drop off the side of that mountain. Would have probably resulted in more than a flesh wound! [emoji12] Man, that was fun! I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat. Who is with me?

I'd do the trail again, that one spot is not friendly. Luckily Dwayne got me out of that. Every time I hit the gas the rear slid towards the ledge. At lunch, I digested my seat cover. And my passenger bailed right away[emoji35]

Really later is what I had problems with, the road trip home. Good thing my rock buggy is highway friendly and my buddy has AAA.

GM moved me to a GMC dealer when the Chevy/Hummer service department where I bought mine became disfunctional.

They branded mine.

Dealer service after the sale makes or breaks a dealership.
These guys are friendly and try to fix me up without the rhetoric and excuses of the other place.
They did my head replacement on the I-5 and several things on my Alpha when under warranty without question.

315- agree with you that Moore is decent to go to. I asked before and learned that they had a number of mechanics who Offroad and more importantly still have one or two mechanics who were trained on hummers still in their shop. I always ask if the trained hummer guys are still with them.

The only dealer I will take mine to is Darcy GMC in Joliet IL. They gave me a new Z71 to take on vacation when the head blew on the I5. GM was two weeks out on parts. We were going kayaking and your average loaner wouldn't cut it. I explained there was a reason I bought a H3 and not a shoe box loaner. They came back and said they can't give me a loaner with a class three trailer hitch to pull my trailer full of camping gear and 1 hp boats . The service manager shut me up with a crew cab 8' bed z71. He did ask me not to wheel it or take it off road. I gave it back just as clean as they gave it to me. At the end of the day they were looking to up grade my rig. I didn't bite and they didn't seem to care.
