You've all heard them

For example:

"4 wheel drive simply gets you stuck further away"

and
"4 wheel drive won't stop any faster"

Actually, 4 wheel drive means you're less likely to be hiking home - just ask the 5 car drivers in the ditch tonight.... funny, of the 10 or so vehicles I saw in the ditch, none were 4x4

and that 4x4 doesn't stop faster... actually, it does. The trick to not losing control is to have the 4 wheels braking as evenly as possible. 4x4 does that for you - don't believe me? take your 4x4 pickup, get up to 30 mph, and jam on the brakes in the rain.... rear slides out on you. Put it in 4x4 and do it again.... nice, controlled stop.

*rant off*

and no, my friend, I will not pull you out of the ditch (car teetering on the edge) but I will give you a ride to civilization.... what's funny, he never said anything about it being dumb to have a 4x4.... weird, no? :shifty:

Uh, both of those have a valid point:

-4x4 gets you stuck further just means if you ignore the limitations of your truck you'll get stuck in the harder stuff...further out because 4x4 got you past all the easier stuff.

-4x4 has nothing to do with the stopping ability of your truck. I'm not familiar enough with the Hummer brake system to know if it changes the modulation based on 4x4 mode, but in normal vehicles 4x4 vs 4x2 doesn't change jack about your ability to stop quickly: that's all about ABS (or threshold pedal control) and traction.

I can't stand the built not bought statement. ...I mean come on what did you manufacture the shocks your self or steal them? Did you make the steel for your bumpers or sliders??? No you bought all of it so shut up

I don't understand how being in 4x4 or 4x2 affects rear wheels traction under braking. As fas as I know, that's what a stable, straight stop is all about: Not breaking traction. Isn't that what ABS accomplishes on modern vehicles?

I suppose it's possible to be on a surface that is so slick that even ABS won't help but I just can't get my head around how being in 4x4 would change that?

ABS will generally prevent lockup on modern vehicles. On older vehicles like mine, with a part time transfer case and no ABS, being in 4WD does indeed prevent one axle from locking before the other during braking, since they are forced to spin together. This effectively gives you more braking and more brake control since one axle almost always locks up first on snow/ice when in 2WD. Of course, knowing how to brake in slippery conditions helps. ABS was invented because most people can't modulate the brakes. If an axle locks up and they slide, their instinctive reaction is to push harder on the brakes., which takes them from screwed to REALLY screwed. But I digress...

Ah, makes sense. I guess one would need to have the center diff / tcase locked to force front & rear to spin together then?

Love the sayin but, slightly off topic...thats funny.

And on brakin. Since we all have fulltime 4 wheel drive and ABS, I think. Downshiftin has alot to do w/ it to. Mine, a 06 H3 auto trans. I downshift alot up here in the mtns from cornin and slowin down w/ drivers infront of me. If I have to slam my brakes on, I always try an downshift and to me, that helps 2 or 4 wheel drive. Maybe its the I drive or slow down?:huh:

most cars have a brake bias (I say most because I haven't done the legwork to verify) that prevent the rear from locking up before the front. When you brake, you weight-load the front wheels and unload the rears. When you're braking on wet, icy or snowy pavement, that bias tends not to be enough to keep the rears from locking... enter the 4x4 vehicle with its transfer case selected in 4 hi (loc) - the driveshaft prevents the rears from locking up when you're modulating your brakes (yes, you can go into a 4 wheel slide, but if you modulate your brakes while in 4 wheel drive you can stop far quicker than you can if you leave the transfer case in 2 hi)

I can even use a different example... my Disco II has the non-locking case, and driving it home when it was super-slick snow was an effort in frustration because while you could get going, if you turned, the rear end would try to beat the front out of a corner.... solely because the transfer case doesn't lock.... my wife, was in the "it doesn't matter" camp, until Sat night. We drove the LR home, then swapped into my H3 to go do SAR stuff - where I was sliding all over the place in the LR - the H3 was driving like it was on dry pavement

Yep, it was the locked T-case I hadn't thought about as being the reason the rear axle would keep turning

Correct. If you have a differentiating t-case it needs to be locked. Part time cases simply need to be put in 4-hi, since they have no differential and are thus "locked" whenever a 4wd mode is selected.
