The BLM fees are very minor, $5-10.00, and I don't believe that the insurance is a BLM requirement, unless it is required for groups over a certain size.

when the HCI guys showed up from hole in the rock trail where they used to spend a night out on the trail and then come into Moab for their week , there was a rolled H1 . i think they said the guy was messing around on some optional stuff . just sorta seemed like some would rather stand there and watch people thrash their junk than tell them " hey that might not be such a good idea" .
thats just two and i can point you towards 200 people that have ran with them and had a great time and would have lots of wonderful things to say about the HCI events .

so its far more the exception than the rule . its just not the type of trail leadership that i like to see , i dont like people going home and saying " F*&^ Moab those guys tried to kill us ". and having to pay to wheel in my backyard isn't too enticing .

its HCI that wants the insurance info to cover their azz . maybe thats why they wheel the way they do . "phukit its insured" that could be a new motto ...

I looked it up, the insurance is to cover the organizers AND the government in case of liability, according to what I could find on google the threshold was lowered to 25 participants a while back.

Never saw this happen with the California BLM [besides desert races].. at least not yet. I guess we can thank the big race crash and lawsuits out of Lucerne Valley for that.

With that being said, if you have 24 or less vehicles you don't require a special permit or insurance.

I'm going to THCI this year because of a few factors, mainly AM general is there in force and there's a 50/50 chance of the Humvee-C showing up.

I'll join you guys next year, I can't normally take 2 weeks off for an off road trip, this year is an exception
