What really killed chrome accessories were all these ******* corporations that bought up all the mom & pop chrome shops, closed them down and consolidated the business to a single location. The corps trying to improve their bottom line putting out these **** thin "triple chrome plating" jobs which were a ****ing joke. Chrome done 20 years ago is 2 or 3x the thickness and quality of todays garbage. That and the ****ing EPA. I will say there are still a few exception.

Honestly, I loved all the chrome on my slut. But after I put the lift kit on, I couldn't get it into the wash bay during the winter. Literally over a 2 week period everything went to hell. By week 4 or 5 I was peeling off chrome in sheets... So I got pissed off, tore every single piece of chrome (metal & plastic (suprisingly I considered the plastic chrome parts cheap pieces of ****...but it held up better than the metal parts)) off my rig. Everything that fit in the tank (metal and plastic) was dechromed. All metal parts were powdercoated black, plastic was painted black or body color.

I learned a whole lot more about chrome and quality after I bought the deuce. Turns out everything I've come across that is marked with the little GM stamp is pretty nice quality pieces that hold up well. There is also a few aftermarket companies like Predator that put out some awesome billet aluminum pieces that were true works of art. Then there were the rest of them, which I won't even look at---like you said, alot of inferior ****. Fortunately my deuce came lightly sprinkled with GM dealer authorized chrome, and the few extra pieces I put on it are all nice quality with no issues of it looking like crap. I've got the double hoop grill guard, tail light guards, hood gills and wheels that are holding up astoundingly well for the little love that I give in cleaning them.
I'm not one for a blinged out HUMMER--but the last time mine was at the dealer and they drove it up for me to pick up (hadn't seen it for several days)---it caught my attention and pleased me very much with how good it looked. They can be done tastefully.
