V8 Regearing woes

SO I finally pulled the trigger on some 4.56 differential gears for my V8 H3, as I thought its high time.

went online and ordered the following from GMPartsonline.net last weekend (5 Aug 2016)

Front Ring and pinion Gear set part no: 20801812
Rear ring and pinion gear set part no: 23145792

got a notification that they do not have all parts in stock and is waiting for parts, no problem as i'm accustomed to waiting 4-6 weeks for shipment to South Africa in any case.:wink:

Received Notification on the 9th that parts have been shipped with the DHL shipping number. to My surprise the parts got delivered Friday morning 12 Aug 2016 (that's very quick service, took 24 hours to get from Texas USA to Johannesburg SA, but then spend 2 days in the hub :roll: before being delivered) My Wife took delivery as was still at work.

soo I phoned the local shop to arrange change out of the ring and pinion gears over the weekend, as you all know how excited we get when new toys arrive :wink:

when I got home on friday I opened the packages and to my horror the front gear set is correct - 41 teeth on the ring gear and 9 on the pinion gear giving the required 4.56 ratio but, in the rear ring and pinion gear set packaging there is a 41 tooth ring gear but 10 teeth on the pinion gear thus giving 4.1 ratio :whaa:. so now I'm bummed as i had to cancel the installation until the problem can be resolved :huh: have mailed GMPartsdirect on Friday so hopefully will receive feedback on Monday

So did you order them by part number? Looks like the boxes are the ones you ordered.

REAR DIFF:
4.56 = #25980266
4.10 = #25801718

I ran that part number you ordered (#23145792), and it lists it as fitting ALL H3's (5-cyls and V8s)...not to mention about 20 other GM trucks. Obviously can't be correct as the two motors require different gearing. I honestly don't know what application that # is for. Ironically...the ratio is not listed anywhere in the part description (but its obviously 4.10). Regardless...all 8.5/8.6 gears from around 99-up interchange with each other and any 4.56 gear set for a GM 8.5/8.6 will work.

FRONT DIFF:
4.56 = #27801812
4.10 = #20801813

GM does make nice gears but, as you can see from the boxes...they come from China & Mexico. So, I really don't see any advantage over GM gears vs. Yukon. I can say that I have seen many smoked GM gears in H3's...seems to be a quality control issue. I'm not sure if this is due to shoddy set-ups, or just poor quality parts. I try to use Yukon gears unless someone wants something else. Yukon's part numbers are much easier to decipher as well, and they list the ratio right under the part number on the box.

Make sure you use the correct back-lash spec. for the GM gears, as they are special. They use a 2-cut machining process and require less lash than the 5-cut process that everyone else uses. Overlooking this detail will cause issues with your brand new gears.

Technically, you are not suppose to reuse the ring-gear bolts but, I have many times with no issues. The ring gear bolts are LH thread, so if you know this ahead of time...you can save them. Most people not familiar with these axles don't find that out until they break three of em, trying to remove them. They are lefty-tighty, righty-loosey.

Lastly...I get all my small internal parts direct from AAM (not GM): http://www.demandaam.com/ I've noticed many of the aftermarket "Master Install" kits and "Bearing Kits" for the front axle, are not as nice as the ones I get from AAM.

I selected the ring and pinion gears from the menu on their website to ensure that both sets are the 4.56 ratios as its listed in the description. When i placed the order i alse requested that they make sure both sets are 4.56 ratio. Whats interesting though is the set that has the wrong pinion gear in says on the box made in china. But on the gears itsels is a sticker saying made in mexico. So ja will be interesting to see how this one gets resolved as im not gonna fork out for shipping as the initial shipping cost was over $500.

Thanks for the specs on the backlash. Will definately tell the installers. Lyckilly the kit cones with new ring gear bolts so no need to re-use the old bolts.

Quick question the front ring gear has got 10 bolts. Is this correct? As i always read about the 8 bolt setup [emoji53]

China? Mexico? Brazil? Canada? It's almost impossible to get picky nowadays. You sort of "get what you get", whether you like it or not.
Yes...10 bolts on the front ring gear.

I have never had any problems with OEM, just need the 4.56 gearing for my next trip. Towing a 2 ton caravan in 50 degrees Centigrade is going to put a lot of strain on the Hummer so need to do whatever I can in preperation

And my sage continues, just received notification from PayPal that I'm eligible for full refund, but I must send back all the parts on my own cost. naturally I'm not happy at all with this ruling as the initial order was $1374.16 which included $459.39 for shipping, so having to ship all parts back will be another $459.39 for my account and then I will have to re-order everything and pay shipping for a 3rd time taking my total expense just on shipping to $1378.17. which means it will be cheaper to order a 2nd set of rear 4.56 ring and pinion gears and just be done with it.

so any recommendations as to where I can purchase the rear 4.56 ring and pinion gears at a good price and be sure I get the correct parts?

I live in Russia. Jeff Harvey (Yukon Gear) prepare all kit for me and send it to Russia. No problems with install. Problems was with ball bearings (some of them not fit) so this is my fault (maybe i give wrong number). Check twice.

"
4.56:1 RATIO
THIS GEAR SET WAS TAKEN OUT OF BRAND NEW HUMMER H3 REAR DIFFERENTIALS FROM THE FACTORY"

2803 feedback with 100% positive.

I say they are good to go.

I Need some help quickly. My hummer is at the diff shop, already stripped to fit the 4.56 ring and pinion gear set. But they cant source new pinion bearings and seals. Is there a part number that will have the complete set of bearings and seals etc or do I have to individually order each bearing, seal etc. This is for both the front and rear diff
