H3 What is the best type of bedliner to coat a Gobi rack and ARB bumper with?

I was looking at my rack and it seems that I am having trouble keeping up with the rusty spots. Sanding and touchup paint only slow down the problem, but don't fix it. I was thinking about having the whole thing sand blasted and have it coated with beadliner. Also I figured while I am getting that done I might as well take in the ARB bumper and have that done too. I have seen a few types of bed liner and it seems like some are real rubbery and others are real hard and slick. Which would work for my application and is able to be color matched? You're not me, but I would sand blast, epoxy prime and then Line-X. I just like the even cover and finish of it. That's just me.

You mentioned color matching, I would warn you to not color match with line-x, my fenders have faded in just one year.

Line-X seems to have a lot of fading issues. Personally I would look into something else like Rhino Liner.

If you are not in an immediate rush, I should be able to spray Speedliner soon. I am almost finished with H3slate's roof rack and we are going to coat with Speedliner. I have done quite a bit of research on it and it seems like a really good liner that can be done with minimal equipment. I have toalked to a guy locally who is a contractor, and he has used it a lot for decks and around pools and such. He has had some out there for several years now and says there has been no issue with fading. It has a more rubbery feel than LineX, so it would be more grippy for cargo and resist chipping or scratching. I have some sample pieces that I have done some informal testing on and I am pretty impressed with it. I will be doing my own rack in it eventually too.

Anyway, if you would be interested I will let you know when I am all set up to do it.

By the way, I thought about doing mine in LineX when I built it, but the places around here showed little interest in doing it, and priced it at around $750!

The Line-X used to do the DiamondBack bed covers has Kevlar in it and doesn't seem to fade. Not sure how it works on plastic though.

On my light cage for the h2 and my h3 grill I used the rustoleum bedliner in a spray can and the light cage has held up great but the grill is just ok but at least if the rack or bumper you can just touch it up.

Doesn't Gobi sell touch up paint for the racks? I know it goes on pretty thick.

I contacted Gobi a few times trying to get a touch-up kit and a replacement bracket for the ladder, and they don't seem too interested. I guess they do not care about you unless you bought something new from them.

Scarsman, When do you think you would be ready for spraying? Probably when the weather gets better. Maybe in the spring when Natches is thawed out and open we can spray on saturday and wheel on sunday. I am getting the itch to run some trails as soon as they are open.

SGT you will probably want to pm Scarsman about the speed liner. We had some problems getting it for my rack and ended up sending it to the powder coater. The difficulty is there aren't that many dealers of Speedliner, and the one's that he contacted either didn't want to sell it to him, or wanted to charge way to much for shipping.

FYI, BK08 is the paint code on these racks. best to call GOBI vs email on touch up paint issues. If for some reason you are getting rust breaking through the paint, no sense in touching it up. If this is happening, it will keep migrating under the paint. I have seen this 3 or 4 times over the last 9 years. This rareley happens, but has in the past once or twice. There is a local guy that has my 2nd GOBi rack from 04. not one spec of rust anywhere, so we know they hold well. I guess it's possible the PC guys have a bad day? not sure.

If you bought the rack new, it will get warranty if it's not a use, abuse, lack of maint. issue. If you bought it used, you're on your own OR you can have GOBI assist you and you will be charged for the repairs. Either way, they can help you and have helped owners who have been in accidents, trail damage, etc.

These racks are epoxy undercoated before PC'd. If you do have rust migrating under both coats, have it blasted and redone. spraying over the top will only cover up the issue, but not fix it properly.

Does anyone know a place in the Portland area that can do a good sand blast and epoxy primer and powder-coat my Gobi rack for a decent price? I bought it second hand, so no warranty for me... :shame: What should be a fair price? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I agree with the others that touch up paint doesn't get rid of the rust problem.

Have you tried using the liquid chemical rust converters ?

You can use these to get the rust under control first then touch up once you have the rust under control.
