The new 4.3l EcoTec3 V6 (LV3) from GM looks impressive. The old 4.3 was basically a 350 -2 cylinders. This is like an LS1 -2 cylinders but with direct injection, DOD, and all kinds of other goodies. 285HP and 305 ft/lbs torque. It's not a rocket ship, but it is so far ahead of the old 4.3. Wish I could get a '14 Chevy S-10 with this engine. :)

3.6vvt twin turbo has 420 hp - it has good torque, but it has to spin harder to do it

I don"t know about variable vane turbos, but my 6.4 TD with compounding turbos is not that fast off the line. till it gets boost going ~2500 rpm.

I bought a new F150 Platinum three months ago with the Ecoboost. The 5.0 was what I really wanted but towing my Jeep through the Rockies a few times each year made the decision for me against the V8. Most new turbo motors have completely eliminated the lag found years ago and the peak torque at 2,600 rpms then remaining flat until redline seals the deal. Also, forced induction engines do not suffer from altitude sickness like a normally aspirated engine like the 5.0 V8 would.

After 8k miles the fuel economy is noting special but I bought it for the power, not the mpg.

ecoboost is a neat system, though MPG and that silly location of the intercooler would make me hesitate....

But would the 5.0 get any better mpg? This truck is a daily driver road warrior and will get 35k + miles per year for three years then traded. The intercooler could be mounted under the oil pan and it wouldn't affect my use of the vehicle. This Platinum model is one plush, loaded and comfortable ride though, I am really enjoying it, especially the power but that is likely why the fuel economy has been poor. My old truck was a crew cab Silverado with the 5.3 and this Ecoboost feels like it has twice the torque.
