Well, looks like Windows 8 is being released this Friday.. I have it installed on two of my computers, due to me being in IT and going to school for it, I have had it now for about 4 months. I actually like it.. It is a really light operating system and super fast. It loads in about 5 seconds.:thumbs: For those who have been using smartphones, well, that is the way your Windows 8 is set up.. It is all Apps, from the Desktop, down to messaging, store, weather, news. You can set it up as a feed option on those apps so it will flash a preview of what is going on inside of it..Like your Friends app, it will collect your friends from all kinds of different sources and update you to any posts they might have made, what they are up to.....It was built and designed for touch screens such as tablets or like my Touchsmart Hp, but works fine on other computers... So as soon as you log in, all you will see is a screen of apps, and if you want the desktop click on it and there you are, if you want to go back to the home screen, move the cursor to the upper right hand side of the screen and you will get a pop out choice of options such as going back to the home screen, accessing other options, shutting down and so on.. It is totally going to be a love/hate thing for sure.. Some will hate it, some will think it is alot better, or just like it more, such as I do.. Any questions post here, and we can all help each other out with this new madness...:huh:

Ugh - I have been running the beta and consumer previews. Windows 8 will be the reason my last PC is replaced by a Mac OS X machine.

Boots in 5 seconds? Are you using solid state hard drive?

I can't see how this OS is better for the enterprise. Great for social media - which of course is just about the antithesis of getting work done.

So other than the apps/tiles stuff, how much has changed in the background versus windows 7? I don't have a touch screen pc, so i may stick with windows 7.
On another note, I run a solid state drive and my windows 7 boots really fast. I guess my quad core 3rd gen i7 processors may have something to do with that lol

Yeah, might have a wee bit to do with it.. It is still pretty much windows 7 but with just a lil different design.. The one good thing is they were not too rushed, so it seems to be really stable. I am running a dual boot 7 and 8 on my laptop, windows 8 on my HP touch screen, windows 8 and Ubuntu on my work/learn Pc. Windows 8 does allow you to tweak a few more things than 7 does but really not too much different other than how you get to certain things. I still have to check it out really good. Just got the edition they are going to release on friday a week ago, I have been messing with the work in progress one for a couple of months.. The main reason that they designed it was so they could start installing windows on tablets.. Seems since tablets started getting poplular, that is all people wants to buy now, so Microsoft wants to line their pockets in the arena also.

Agreed, but IMO they are doing it at the expense of desktop users.

I have been playing with it at work a bit. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I have issues with the data that gets reported back to the mothership containing things like what software I have installed.

I run a solid state in my windows 7 box at work and it screams like a scalded dog. Not sure I'll be upgrading my work machine to Windows 8 anytime soon.

Been running Windows 8 for nearly a year now, I love it, and so does my computer too. I have no complaints other that I wish the shut down was one click away, and the control panel was accessible from every folder view.

That seems very likely. Microsoft knows they *MUST* recapture a large part of the market that is right now using iPads and Android tablets, and that is still mostly consumers.

Microsoft is really deep in corporate environments and that probably won't change any time soon.

I installed beta on the carputer as soon as it came out and used it some. Boot time is somewhat faster than it is with 7 but I didn't see much difference with resume from hibernate which is how I have it set up. I had some issue with it and stopped using it and never tried the consumer preview which may have had a fix for whatever the issue I had was. The most important thing with a carputer is that it will resume from hibernate and everything works without having to mess with it.

I wasn't very impressed with Metro (the touch screen interface) and this was on a touch screen computer, but to be fair, Metro is easy to disable and everything works much like Windows 7.

It seems as if they are still having some app issues.. Pandora was one of my apps and it quit working.. So I uninstalled it and went to reinstall, and I see that it is nowhere in the appstore now...? dont know what is up with that.. But with any new system, they will be sending out some updates. the more things get used, the more bugs people will find..I guess it goes retail tomorrow, so we shall see then.. Anyone looking to buy a new computer and does not want windows 8, now is the time to start looking.. Once 8 hits the shelves and starts getting installed in the computers coming out of the factory, the windows 7 computer prices will drop..

Why would you install pandora when you could just open up a browser? I never understand why people install stuff when it isn't necessary, your goal should be to put as little crap on the computer as possible.

And yet, most install Windows. :giggle:

I have mixed feelings on web apps. There are several that work better with a front end app rather than a web interface. On the Windows side, I use PortableApps for just about all my computing needs. Just plug in a thumb drive and viola, my apps are there. Since I am already a hardcore Linux user, I am already used to the freeware apps that come with PortableApps. Then again, I am a professional sysadmin so I have the patience to tweak and get stuff to work.

The whole point of windows 8 is to use apps, hence the window tile things, so that its more mobile friendly.

Well, yes and no. The tiles can be URLs if I am not mistaken. the XBox has the same functionality.

Windows has the same pattern Star Trek does: every other release is usable. Windows 98, XP, and 7 are great...95, ME, Vista, and 8...

Its okay, but still has some bug issues.. Some of the apps does not want to work on mine... Had a Pandora app, and it quit working so I uninstalled and went to install it from the store again, and it is not there anymore.. Hans, if you are considering installing it, just partition your hard drive and do a dual boot set up for now. That way if you do not like it you can uninstall and be back where you started.. But its okay. If I did not get it for free due to the classes I am in, then I would not have bought it, unless I bought a new machine equipped with it.

I usually do the same thing I do at work, use the same stable build of an OS until its no longer supported

Most of my professional software does not support Windows 8 yet, so it's not covered under support, unless win 8 gives me a good reason to upgrade.. I won't.

Pretty much a safe bet that I won't be using it. I haven't used Windows as a primary OS since Windows NT4.0. These days there is little reason to use Windows. I have Win2K and Vista on VirtualBox in order to run EFI Live and SolidWorks. If they would get with the program and release Linux versions like all the VLSI EDA software companies have, then I wouldn't even need VB.
