looks like nothing, but was a lake basin. was pretty dry that year and the water had receded quite a ways so I drove down off the boat ramp. was a pretty remote reservoir, about 70-90 miles from nowhere. anywhoo pulled around to head back to boat ramp and ended up driving into a slight divot only visible from the top of the boat ramp in broad daylight. it was an hour or so before dusk. dropped through the top layer and into sticky wet clay, reservoir bottom. worked forward and back. no go. just dug deeper. nobody to yank me out, about 30 yards away from boat ramp and perpendicular to it. front end buried with clay over lower A arms, and skid plate firmly suctioned. grooves tires were sitting in were filled with water. scoop clay with shovel and mud wouldn't fling off shovel. used all my firewood off roof rack down in troughs to try and gain traction and it all just sank. no winch, no matrix, no common sense. was there for a day and a half digging. the story goes on and on...I met a worthless county cop who although he did not write me a ticket took his winch and large pickup, said good luck, and left. 1 bar cell service, tow was $800 and wasn't sure they could get me out. started to sprinkle next morning. by the grace of god the clouds parted and the storm went around both sides of reservoir. never seen anything like it. had we gotten hit, it would've turned into a huge bog. woulda written the rig off I guess. as it was made it up the road and met up with a rancher (who happened to be the only 1 out of 3 ranches that was home that week and was getting ready to leave for the day) and she came down and popped me out. got lucky. real lucky. too many things could've gone wrong and the end story would be a lot different. lesson learned, stay the F outta reservoirs.
