Having read more of this thread now, I get the sense that a lift is in your future? Eh? :shifty:

I can write a book report on the pros and cons to a lift. I have done tons of research and am very skeptical but I do think it will help make a better rig. Especially when I am running tough trails with custom jeeps on 40s and little spotting. I have been saving as much as possible so hopefully around xmas time I will be set. I think I would be the first so cal lifted h3 that wheels with our group so I will provide info to these guys too. If I hate it I will take it off and sell it. Tim thinks I will love it though and will make a more capable rig and he hasn't been wrong yet...haha

I have the most "undesirable" year to boot. smallest motor, most susceptible to motor issues, not even an adv. package and this thing rocks. In all types of terrain I have done I have had very little issues. On road you can't beat it. A great riding 4x4 for on road, great Daily Driver. Mud, Everyone assumes that you need the big block 454 V8 with 44in mud boggers to do some crazy mud but with the duratracs and the I5 I have excelled in mud. It handles it very well. In the snow it did well also. I havent tried sand but power might be the only issue for me there. I would leave the setup I have now and never do another mod if I wasnt rockcrawling. For a basically stock height vehicle, it does amazing but I want some more clearance.

Agree 100%. I too would like a Rancho lift. Not quite ready for the 15 grand to "complete" the system. Like the idea of using H2 wheels on adapters to keep it hummer - but still have the cost of the Rancho kit, labor to install, new wheels (5), new tires (5), new custom UCP, and of course more power which for me is a blower. But that is not "kit" ready yet. So - for now, I'm sticking with a significant shock upgrade. But no doubt - a replication of the GM Moab truck is about as optimum as it gets in my book.

Flash, I can keep costs down on the rancho because I can fabricate my own UCP which would save about 500 bucks and I have access to a lift and a buddy who has done IFS lift installs before so that will save me another 500-1000 bucks depending on the install price.

If you can do it - by all means I think it is a great upgrade. What are your plans for a power increase? There are a couple blowers around but none "kit ready" for the I5 that I am aware of.

Haven't figured that out yet. I have talked to Mel at offroad evolution about a long travel ifs in the future when im out of college but for now I may see if he can have a "bolt in" ifs housing bigger then the 7.6 and not only will it make it stronger I would regear too and gain back all the power

OK Chris;

I not sure it is wise to do the installation yourself, but if you want to take that on, I'll buy another tow stray. :mock:

To make sure you know what you're getting yourself into, I want to see a detailed cost breakdown which should include the cost of the Rancho lift kit, new shocks, new wheels, new custom front drive shaft with universal joints, (anything else I forgot) ... and I'll let you leave tires off the list since you said you aren't going to larger tires, but you have to find 16" wheels with 4.5" backspace.

Lets be honest here ... costs to an 18 year old living at home getting holiday $ from family is much different than adults living on there own and respsonsible for bills and family costs. Dont you remember when you were young and had little to no real worries? This is the time to boldly go where you know you soon will not be able to. Get this all out of your system while you can, I say ... because the timeline for this stuff ... is slowly dwindling away. Live it up!! Do the mods! Regret about what could have been or what you wanted to do, is the worst emotion to live with.

I'm always interested in these discussions and was trying to follow the thinking going on about the effect this lift has. This is a shot of an H3 with one installed that ran the Mojave with me. You can see the back of my H3 in front of it.
I saw several mentions of wanting and needing more ground clearance and not wanting to drag the UCP as the reason for wanting a Rancho lift. It is my understanding that this kit lowers the diff and installs a new cross bracket to raise the frame and body. So somebody with one, how much added clearance do you have under that cross member and diff?
In the rear if I am correct the kit has higher arched springs, so how does that increase clearance under the rear diff, axle and spring mounts, shocks.

Here goes my opinion. The h3 is a rare vehicle in the fact that a 35" tire will fit on the truck with no modifications, and can go through full articulation of the suspension and not contact any other part of the vehicle. I tried the torsion keys and cranking the adjusters, and to me it rode like crap. I've had 7 new 4x4 and 3 used 4x4's over the years, every one had some sort of suspension lift or body lift or both. None of them created any ground clearance, but what they did was create room for larger tires which then created the ground clearance that is needed. What the rancho does is keep the torsion bars at the proper spring rate for a great ride. And also creates 4 inches of clearance under the transmission and transfer case that you do not get by cranking the torsion bars. And most of all it just looks better! Or as my sons say "it looks beast now" i
