Just happened to stumble across this place today. Humvee graveyard. De-comissioned...crushed...chopped up...illegal to sell. WTF is wrong with this country?

This is depressing to look at. The government is supposed to be broke but they waste opportunities like this to make money.

"Can't let them fall into enemy hands"...or some governmental BS like that! They can give free phones to drug dealers to use for drug deals or terrorists to use as triggering devices but no way in hell will these government sell surplus vehicles to law-abiding citizens!

Contact your congressman. Congressman can introduce legislation to release the H1's for surplus spares. The problem is that the H1's were purchased with appropriated funds and cannot be legally released.

it would be a win-win for an elected official. Would clean up a scrap yard and woul put some $ back into the treasury.

I will not divulge the location...and there may be a continuation to this story. This facility will be destroying 6000 humvees over the next two years.

Forget selling to civvies...I think rebuilding them and selling them 3rd world countries would certainly put a few bucks in uncle Sam's pockets. Seems stupid as hell to just junk them.

AMG has a deal with the DoD that they can't be sold to the public. None of the safety features required of civi vehicles are in them. Too much liability for AMG.

The manager told me they can't sell any part of these that could possibly be used against the US gov in some sort of uprising. They do sell the tires.

I'll remember these piles of H1s the next time I see people trapped by raging wildfires, tsunamis, volcanos, hurricanes, etc. Not to mention utility companies, mining & exploration companies, farmers, etc. There are lots of useful civvy markets....especially in places like Haitti, Guatamalla, and Africa.

This place also has a couple great big 8-wheel drive tanker trucks.....one with only 600 miles. Original price...$450,000! Yup...got a date with the torch. Not to mention there are two full-time gov employees on the payroll that do nothing but sit in an air-conditioned office and validate each crushed vehicle.

Come on!

I saw many of the thoroughly thrashed HMMWVs they brought back from Iraq. The waste was shipping them back to the USA instead of making a reef in the Persian Gulf with them. Repair/rebuilding costs for the hulks would be outrageous. I'm guessing there's some obscure mandatory recycling law that the auto salvage business lobby got passed.

That makes sense, ship them back from Iraq, crush them here, then send them on a ship to china to be melted into more walmart crap and sent back here

That would be better than having them stay there and be more spare parts for those ISIS guys that are taking over the entire area!

If you watch the news closely we do sell them to other country's there in the back ground. for example Israel Gaza conflict you can see them with the tanks on the side of the road. The Humvee's are striped before being shipped out for destruction at various locations parts deemed salvageable by the government standers that is and then sent off to be chopped up and turned into scrap. Yea it sucks but think of all the recent news right now ISIS is recruiting on our own home turf there are just too many radicals out there now days.
