If I'm understanding you correctly, you're wondering why the AC runs when you have the air recirculating even if you don't actually have the AC set to "on".

If so, the answer is because that is how GM designed the system. It is so that there is not a build up of condensation in the vehicle when the air recirculation is on, which generally it builds up on the windows and can cause visibility issues. It's just to dry the air out and keep the windows clear.

Yep, and I'm old school. I don't want the a/c on unless I make it come on. If you had the defrost on (without the a/c) and you have the windows start fogging you can just hit the little a/c button for that dry air. Easy. However, if you are living by the coast running the defrost with the a/c and it's humid you will fog the OUTSIDE of the windows and then have to drive around with the wipers on to be able to see. To fix THAT you have to run the heater. Why I need to go through all that BS is beyond me. One other gripe, is that if it is in the low 70's and you hit the defroster then not only does the outside of your windshield fog up requiring you to use the wipers like an idiot when it's sunny outside, but you also freeze yourself out because the a/c is cooling off the inside. So now I have to turn on my wipers on a humid, warm, sunny, summer day and look like a goober wearing a jacket in my truck so I don't freeze just because someone took common sense away from me.

While I tend to agree that "I" should be the one to decide when to turn the A/C compressor on, it does indeed help to defrost/defog, and as long as the temp control is set to warm/hot, the compressor should not produce "Cold" air, only "dry" air.

You have the wrong vehicle.

-headlights
-door locks
-front axle
-lockers
-airbags

...all automatically engaged or disengaged with no consideration (or choice) from the driver. Sigh.

So , if I don't want any air flowing in , fan off , I press the recirculation button to close outside vent , that ac clutch is still gonna be running. ?

Yeah you're right Alex. Fan off, clutch off. Recirc light on. I misread that post. I just checked to confirm.

So does anyone remember the old a/c systems where you could select fan speed as well as compressor speed (how cold the air was)? Is the H3's a/c clutch engaging the same amount in recirc and a/c on? I can't feel much difference between one or the other, or using both together.

I've never even heard of a variable speed AC compressor. I thought the temperature was always controlled by using the mixer door that would adjust how much cold vs hot air was being blown in. Naturally as less cold air is being blown through the system, the less often the compressor would need to kick on, so it's self governing with that respect.

Can you remember when cars came without a/c? Or when you wanted it installed on a new car, the car was taken across the street to the factory authorized install center and they installed either the factory a/c or if none was available you got a custom install? I've had at least two cars with a variable speed compressor, a 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce and a 1978 Mazda GLC. I'm sure there were others.

My Audi A3 had it. Think it was a 2007. I believe they use the term "variable displacement compressor"
