Integrated Dash CAM - Reverse camera

Soo, my next evolution of the H3 for touring is to go to 37" tires as well as a Jamboree rack over the spare wheel, thus nullifying the rear view completely.

My first option was to Jerry rig the H's reverse camera system to be permanently on when driving, thus being able to still see behind when travelling, but then I came across the Mirror type dash cams, and I'm actually contemplating ripping the stock rear view mirror out and replacing it with one of these, thus getting some nice trail footage while were at it

something like this perhaps: https://www.amazon.com/Mirror-Scree...B07CMK74JJ&keywords=Rear View Mirror Dash Cam

so my question basically is, will it be worth the effort:huh:

I'm adding a second rear camera that will be mounted up high and hooked to my Kenwood radio. I'll also be adding a front camera. My radio has inputs for both, but I may end up getting a dedicated monitor again like I had in my red H3, we will see how well it works with the radio.

I'm working on something like this right now, mostly for off-road. I bought a cheap O 4 channel video changer / DVR from ebay and have mounted a front and rear camera and monitor with plans on cameras on the bottom of the mirrors as an added precaution when I don't have a spotter. Mirrors are going to be tricky I'm sure. I haven't hooked cameras to the monitor yet and the monitor is only temporary until I can swing a new deck with a monitor I can use instead. I welded the back camera mount on a bike rack bracket I already had similar to what Schwarttzy offers on his site. https://schwarttzy.com/product/h3-backup-camera-mount/.

reverse camera system to be permanently on when driving

What are you expecting to see back there you can't sort of see vibrating in your side mirrors? Tailgaters?

Maybe I'm missing something after eight years in the saddle of an H3T with a SlantBack. If it wasn't for the inset backup camera display I'd have removed my rear-view mirror years ago to get a bit more visibility of where I'm going. Swear it blocks 20% of the view - I use it like a sun shade.

I like that kit. Provide a good factory look, helpful for insurance purposes and good for tight backing and forward.

People standing behind something that has very little visibility out the back? I installed a backup camera on my red H3 after nearly backing over a grocery store employee that was driving one of the electric scooters backand their friend when they decided it was a good idea to sit right behind my car to have a chat. Fortunately for them I had a feeling there was someone back there and they realized I was backing up and got out of the way.

Also I'd like having an always on rear camera when towing, especially smaller trailers that like to hide. Also you can keep an eye on any cargo in the trailer. Even though I'll double and triple check my tie downs, it'd be nice to be able to keep a close eye on it while driving, especially on long distances. Course that's all with a high mount rear camera.

very nice setup, love the camera placement, had the same idea for the rear camera, but never thought about the front one, as that will also assist when doing obstacles

I'm just used to being able to see all around, to pre-empt any possible situation, and then the biggest requirement would be when backing up, have had a few near misses already and thats without the rear window being obstructed :emb:

Hey Guys!

I've developed a couple parts and went through the same ideas and came up with some simple products just for this.

I created a simple H3 Backup Camera Mount to make it easy to hide a camera like the Pioneer NDBC8 Universal CMOS Surface Mount Backup Camera inside the spare tire.

I also have created this adapter to connect the OnStar Microphone to an aftermarket radio.

And here's a background image for your aftermarket radio too that I created to give it a finishing touch.

Great stuff Schwarttzy, definately getting my mindset in the same direction :woot:

Little off topic but Korby7, what winch mount do you have there? I like the idea of the hidden winch setup and this looks like another great possibility.

The front bumper was sadly the last of the Thorparts bumpers. I've heard others that unfortunately missed out on them are looking at ARB front bumpers.

Back in. Drive Out. The logic: https://www.google.com/search?q=why....69i57j0l5.10803j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Horse trailers often have a camera system, for an assistant to monitor.

Backing in works great right up until you need to put the groceries or whatever it is you just bought into the rear. Maybe if you have a truck bed or a car that has a trunk that opens upward, or even something with barn doors like a van, then backing in makes more sense. A 5 foot wide door that swings out however isn't likely to clear any car or other obstruction that is behind you unless the car has it's nose to your rear and it is a really, really short car. Hence it's almost always going to be better to pull into a spot with the H3 so that you can actually get into the trunk area. I tried backing in a few times but it was a pain every time I needed to get into the back, so I always just pull in now. A backup camera and lots of checking helps me make sure I'm at least not going to kill anyone.

I've never had a problem backing up and the rear of a T sits high enough that the mirror is about only useful for looking at semi trucks or the sun. The A pillars though, that's a place that could use cameras.

I like this thread so far.
One of my most trying things about the Hummer H3 design is the front A pillars blocking peripheral vision. I've had to get very, very good at looking multiple times for traffic.
Now that is an area I would love some video feedback from.

Quit talking about me! /sadface lol

On that note, should be placing my arb bumper order in the next few days. Still excited about it and in all honesty had not made a final decision last year on the thor vs. arb bumper until the decision was made for me lol.
