2003 H2 Purchase Question Regarding 4WD Issue

After Marble Falls Hummer event with my H3 hubby has been hooked. We went today & looked at an H2 he is interested in (oddly enough in yellow like mine - which I love). He had already test driven it the other day & I test drove it today. I took it to a parking lot to check out the 4WD which is set up just like mine.

It went into 4LO without issue & when I stopped, put it in N, & pushed 4HI button (which did light up), it did not completely disengage the 4LO but the light was off on the 4LO & lit on the 4HI. Hubby took over & tried going back thru the process again which did not change the outcome. He put it in R & went back a very short distance with no luck. After going thru the process 1 more time, he put it in R again & backed up a longer distance (about 1-2 car lengths) which fixed the issue.

When we got back to the dealer we tried the 4WD again & there were no issues with it going into or coming out of 4LO.

My question is does that sound like a problem or could it simply be that it has not been in 4WD for possibly quite some time as I have heard you should put your Hummer into 4WD at least once a month if you haven't used it?

I tried calling you for your expertise on this one Green1 but could not get a hold of you & CalamityGirl texted you for me.

Sounds odd. Really, the light on the dash should not change until the actuator/linkage have moved. On mine if I am trying to shift from one range to the other and it can't, like if I'm rolling to fast, or it's not in neutral, then the light for the range it is in will flash for a few seconds and then it gives up and just stays where it is. Could be a module or actuator issue.

Been awhile since I had a duece but what Scarsman said sounds right. Seems like my dash light would blink if it couldn't do what I wanted it to. If you drive on pavement for very far in 4lo it will bind up and it takes backing awhile, sometimes longer than you think to get it to disengage.

Sorry I was a a work dinner and did not get home until late. What you describe I have heard before. Backing up a couple of car lengths is the cure I have heard also. I only had it happen to me one time in my H2 and I did the same thing and it work fine. I am no expert but from my experience I would think it was fine. I might try to act concerned about it and use it to get the dealer to have it checked out or give me a ninety day drive train warranty or drop the price another 500.

Do what Matt said. You will love the H2. I have an H1 & H3Alpha. Had another H3 & an H2. I love driving the H1, the H3 Alpha is awesome for power, I liked the first H3 but overall the H2 was the most comfortible go anywhere vehicle I have ever owned.

That is what we figured because it worked fine after that but thanks all. The dealer said he would have it checked regardless. We will see how it goes.

Good luck! I have, occasionally, had to back up to fully disengage 4 low lock on both my H3 and the H1. It need not be a problem.

We're working on it. The one with the 4LO nonissue issue did not work out as the dealer was not putting any priority on it, said he would call by a certain time, that time well passed, Lincoln called & the guy hadn't even started yet, so Lincoln literally told him to go "F" himself...that's Lioncoln.

But he has now found a nicer white H2 & the people are actually working on it so hopefully we will know soon. If he gets one in time then he will bring it to Marble Falls in a couple weeks.
