Who used what for GPS and finding trail routes last year? OnX seemed to work best for me so far but it's hard in Sand Hollow with all the poorly marked, shifting trails and the numerous forks and crossing paths.

If I had a rig I'd likely step up to one of the larger Garmin units but they are a bit pricey.

Onx is good but not great. Trails Offroad did update a lot of trails this year but like Alrock said, sooo many trials cross each other it gets confusing.

Ok time off scheduled.... see you all in April. :) Still in the Jeep, my H3 is still out of commision (but I still have it).

Solo, probably with my border collie Rubi. :) My wife and other dogs are gonna sit this one out.

I used OnX and the Garmin overlander. My phone GPS position was not always accurate. Some of the trails were not in the Garmin but I did not take the time to add gpx files either.

I found that preloaded maps using OnX and then using a Garmin satellite device for live location works the best. Then use the OnX gps as a reference.

With cell phone providers moving into satellite functionability, wonder how long until that transitions to full time accurate phone gps.

Hey all the black sheep of the black sheep is BACK once again. I've got an Airbnb confirmed 5 minutes from Sand Hollow... staying Saturday through Friday, so I'll hit that opening run with yall this year! Bringing my pup Rubi. She matches the jeep :)

We are only a couple weeks from leaving. Maybe three weeks for most of you. Was hoping to bring the Jeep JKU, but looks like the ZR2 is probably our vehicle this year. Everything else is questionable in reliability. The H3 needs a water pump and the BCM may be questionable. My 2500hd just overheated Friday, so it needs some work to be a tow vehicle. Too many vehicles to keep them all maintained.

500 mile test trip to the white mountains, and then my patience being tested in Phoenix.

Tentative group meals at the Outpost, which of course are always optional.
Sun - burgers and dogs
Mon - Rascole's brisket
Tues - local BBQ, catered to the Outpost ($30 pp, please)

We'll be arriving Sat afternoon around 4 pm and taking it easy, maybe just Costco pizza for dinner. Anyone is welcome to stop by that night, and any night.

Update! Jeep Gladiator is in the shop needing a front diff rebuild or replace... should be under warranty but still... but the H3 is coming together after being parked mostly for YEARS. Yes got a transmission rebuild and kept it. :) So it's a toss up if I'll be bring the Jeep or the Hummer, but either way Rubi is coming (that's my doggo). Of course last minute car troubles are all a part of prep for Blask Sheep Week!

Hey all, my H3 is just about ready... but have NOT done any shakedown runs. It's questionable but should be good to go. New tranny, new brakes, new stereo, new lights, but still need to throw the underarmor back on.

However-- the H3 is one of the least equipped amongst the Black Sheep crew. It does have a 4inch Rancho lift, but no solid axle swap or anything crazy, and I do not think I'm equipped to fix any broken axles like Reloader had to do last year, I think I'd be screwed if something broke.

Question: do I rush it and bring the H3 because it's Black Sheep *Hummer* Week, or do I bring the lifted Gladiator which is more capable (4" lift, solid axle, front/rear lockers, warranty on things I may break)?

Bring what you want, but, in my opinion, I think we are better prepared for H3 trail fix than a Gladiator fix. The front CV is a 15 minute fix with the Rancho installed, Steve's rear axle was more of fluke and he was on 37's.

Ok thanks! It's PUSHING it to get the H3 ready.... but after it being mostly parked for 5-10 years I'm really excited to get it back to the 'sheep (it's been a WHILE). I just rebuilt the transmission and have to take it back for its 500 mile check. It'll be a miracle but would love to wheel it. Either way see ya Saturday night/Sunday morning. :)

Well this is probably what's blocking me... got the stereo done but I think the interface I'm using is giving me unacceptable static/noise... this plus getting the underside ready is pushing my sanity limits. Good news is the h3 is coming along nicely. Just not in time for this trip.

Ah, you must have the subwoofer upgrade. I tried so many different audio adapters but could never get rid of the engine whine noise coming through the speakers. I eventually used the speaker output on the radio instead of the low-level output and added an inline volume control to keep from over-powering the H3 built-in amp.

Alright, I think I finally have things together for the trip. BBQ is booked for Tuesday evening at the Outpost. Walmart pickup list assembled but not yet sent. Car has air in the tires. Birdhouse in Page is beckoning to us to enjoy some great fried chicken on the way up.

We'll be at the Outpost Saturday by 6; anyone's welcome to stop by if they want.

Wooohoooo I'm dialed in and we're heading out Saturday morning. I got a nice dog platform for the back seat as a last minute upgrade too, Roo is gonna love that. If I get to town early I'll stop by otherwise I'll see you at Sand Hollow Sunday morning. What time are we meeting in the Sand Hollow lot? Also I'm really excited to stay for the whole trip this time. I don't think I've made the whole week ever so far.

Local tire shop was able to patch the tire from last week. Truck drove great headed into work so I’ll just be packing up the remainder of the stuffs and head up to flag tonight.

Then sandhallow Saturday mid to late afternoon. Should be out of flag around noon at the latest.
