The one I got is rated for 24,000GVW whatever that is...and for 28,000 lbs so I'm guessing it is good I might upgrade it depending on how it performs this summer and most likely replace it for sure when I go to 37"s

Should we start throwing out transmission temps we are seeing for each model of transmission cooler? May help to figure out which one is the best fit for the H3.

3.5L I-5, Tru-cool 4589, No Temp Bypass

OAT (F) - TFT High(F) - Condition - Traffic - Towing
33 - 152 - Highway/city - Light - N
40 - 156 - Highway/city - Light - N
45 - 156 - City - Medium - N
50 - 158 - Highway/city - Light - N
55 - 158 - Highway/city - Light - N
68 - 168 - Highway/city - Medium - N
78 - 178 - Highway/city - Light - N
85 - 189 - Highway/city - Heavy - N
92 - 188 - Highway/city - Medium - N

It seems so far that my TFT with this cooler stabilizes around 100 F above ambient temps. When running at highway speeds the temps are 90-95 F warmer than ambient and in the city or at lower speeds are 100-105 F above ambient. I am not sure that this cooler would keep the temps low while towing. I might add a fan or an additional cooler this summer.

You can also run another cooler in series with what you already have (another member did that)

I can't remember who that was, but I saw that. I may stack them in the same manner. I think he had the cooler one size smaller than mine. Going to find that post now.

ETA: Found it.

I'm going to do that...I believe his name is reloaded the guy hats running dual coolers....as soon as I get the thermostat and scanner I'll assets if it is necessary...but I think it will be necessary to add an additional one since i after driving 20 miles I touch mine and I burn the scheiße out of my hand.

My cooler also becomes very hot in short order. My daily drive is 26 miles one way and the cooler is too hot to touch when I get to work, but the trans temps have been well within the "safe range" so far. I am not too worried so long as I have a way to monitor fluid temps. I will continue to monitor my temps and post up data as it begins to heat up for the benefit of other users.

ETA: Though I am still on 33" tires and no lift so YMMV.

Question, I mounted my cooler and both the inlet and outlet are on the bottom, should I worry about this? I didn't pay attention to which was in and which was out.

If you have the inlet and outlet at the bottom, you are not likely to get the fluid filling the cooler and thus being cooled. Essentially the fluid will flow from in to out with minimal cooling. Ideally, you should have a side orientation with inlet at the bottom, outlet at the top. With the outlets at the top you have a chance of trapping air at the top of the cooler. You might be fine, but you know you'll be fine if you change how it's oriented.

Thanks alrock, tomorrow I'll buy some more hose and new connections and set it up sideways

Alex, I went back and saw your running one larger cooler and reloader is running 2 smaller ones...have you guys compared temps and saw who runs cooler?

I am so much cooler than Reloader.:)

Haven't compared temps as I've never taken the time to figure out how to get the trans temp on the I5.

I need to move the UltraGuage over and see what my trans temps are with the external cooler.

My derale 13503 ran around 168 with a 160 stat. After I got my trans rebuilt i used a different cooler a B&M and I was running around 174-176 so I swapped back to my derale and still 174-176 I don't know why it's running hotter with the new trans!!!

I may run both and put in a 140 stat. I'm curious if 2 coolers make a big difference or not

Chris do you plan to add a fan to your trans cooler? before summer hits i plan on adding a e fan set up to both the radiator and the trans cooler.

Yes, I already have 1 pusher fan on for the rad. Gotta put my other one one again for trans makes a huge difference low speed crawling

yea my concern when going slow = minimal to zero airflow, i plan to add one and connect it to the spod system so i can just select the fan and click it on and off when the temps are rising while off road and stuff.

I upgraded to a 40K transcooler by tru cool. It doesnt have a thermal bypass. This was done to take control of the more heat created by a 3200K stall converter.

After a 30 mile trip with ambients between 75-80 I got 115* at the trans at highway speed. If I step on it the temps will rise to 195* though at city speeds.

The double row radiator behind it was running 160-170 at 60 mph.

What would be too cool for the trans?

Bringing this back to the front page.
After installing a new transmission, I bought a new Tru cool 40,000 cooler (identical to the one I had before). Completely bypassing the radiator cooler.
Its right behind the grill, with 2 pusher fans behind it on the condenser.

I don’t have a temp sensor in the transmission, and was wondering if its normal that the tranny cooler is too hot to touch.

Not towing anything.

You should be running somewhere in the 70c range with this ambient temps so thats abit hot to touch

That seems high.

I have a 40k BTU as well and bypass the OEM radiator and use an external cooler bypass (can't remember the exact temperature). Probably same system you have.

Normally she runs 140~160 F. I am using a custom sensor on the torque pro app. If you have a scan gauge or similar or an Android phone you can check the transmission temperature.

BUT it's not the same as the inlet and outlet oil temperature of the external cooler. Even so it gets you in the operational ball park.

I think it might be bit dusty where you live, judging by the hood. That or it's actually been 5 years since you last drove that thing. :giggle:
