That's messed up. We had something like that here in Arizona for "troubled utes" and a a few years back a young kid died - the camp was shut down and the people running the camp were prosecuted & were sent to the pen!

I know there are some kids that need to be shocked out of their bad behavior but that seems a little extreme. Of course in these days of no discipline, fear of being hauled into court if you try to discipline a kid ,etc I guess I can see parents outsourcing the discipline and behavioral modification needs of their kids. In my youth you got a whipping. If you got one at school you got another one when you got home. You learned real quickly what worked and what didn't.

This is BS. I don't have kids, but I have been in the military for 24 years and continue to be in DoD for a total of 35 years.

That kind of treatment doesn't even happen at "real" boot camp.

Great, four adults can make a kid cry. I bet that offers thoes adults some satisfaction at the end of the day.

I am no way infavor of a mamby-pamby approach to kids; but humiliation is not a real good motivator for changing behavior. It usually results in motivation, but not always with a positive result.

I think a parent can be strict, but still have a compassionate tone for thier own kids. These "camp counselors" are pretty sick to take that kind of job. IMHO; other opinons may vary.

I think I did that once to my daughter when she dropped the video camera on one of our runs :whaa:

So that's why they rode with Dave and me for the last part of John Bull. And I thougt it was because they liked our trucks :)

My teenage girls have never been through anything like that and won't. Them joining the military is one thing. Me farming out a kid to have someone else deal with their discipline or behavioral issues...don't think so.

Uh... yes it does. Routinely.

Are you guys serious? They were just yelling, that's it.. You've obviously never been through Infantry training.

Yep.

Not to any individual in particular, but if yelling is too tough, stay out of the Army and Marines.

Yep.

Usualy the kids that end up there are in serious need of help. Not listening to parents, staying out until all hours of night and in some cases assualting parents. Until you have to deal with them you really don't understand how worthless our juvanile justice system is. Many of these kids learn early how to play the system and they do.

Met a mother a few years ago who was at her wits end with her child. She would yell, the kid would yell back, the kid would leave and stay out all night. When the cops caught him they would just bring him back home. Since he was under age she couldn't kick his sorry butt out. Of course no dad around too help.

I looked at her and asked why are you arguing? Say what you have to say. If he yells, then it's just him yelling and looking silly. Set the rules and be done with it.

Children do get that bad.

Everyone I am sure has been through it. Most teens i am sure will go through it, but you have to comunicate with them properly. I know and I am sure almost everyone else knows from experiance.

The little secret here is that these tactics work, that's why they've been used for such a long time. Send a spoiled brat (adult or child) through this type of "trial by fire" and you'll get a completely different person on the other side. This will adjust the attitude quite a bit and will build a stronger person. If you go soft on a person, they will end up soft. If you are hard (not mean, just tough), they will end up hard. The more difficult environment that a person has been through, the more they can handle tough times. This is a proven tactic.
