Clean Rust Stains?

My ride has a bunch of rusted screws and bolts around the outside body. I'm replacing all of them with new but there are still rust stains around left behind. I tried to use a sponge with the green scubber side to see if that would work (without scratching the paint). Nah. I tried that rust remover chemical that they use to dip parts into. Nope. Any ideas? Something to place on a rag and scrub (in circles)? I haven't tried rubbing compound yet, but won't that scuff up the remaining paint?

You could try to use that tar and wax remover.. I use it and it will take out alot of other stuff also. The stuff that I got is made by Rustoleum.. Worth a try and is good to have around.

BTW, has anyone tried CLR cleaner? My wife handed me a bottle of the cleaner. That's the stuff that cleans calcium, lime and rust. Works on coffee pots, shower, kitchen, and? I wonder? I'll try it on a spot thats not so visable just in case. I'm just curious if any of ya'll tried this on your vehicles.

In theory it seems like it should work. Just remember that the households things your wife cleans, don't have paint on them. Like you said, test it in an area that won't show if it does affect the paint.
