Always prepare for the worst ....
Pepper Blaster, Bear Spray, Gun, etc.

I've done 155 Zach. Hard to blame the young stupid soon to be dead guys for what they do. I was once there myself and probably should be dead. You're not the one hammering on them kudos to you man. I guess I'm getting old with different views. Like Dirty Harry I'm realizing my limitations and gave it up. But my heart still says I can wheelie at 90, be stupid and scare the **** out of those old farts :)

as for pipes and being loud, I always hear a Harley approaching from behind, but crotch rockets you don't hear until their next to your door and scare the **** out of you. Either way I'm against it but it seems the crotch rocket guys are usually the ones driving like jerks. Just like the incident that happened in New York recently.

Don't stereo type Matt :) Or profile whatever you call it. Bikers normally go faster than the flow of traffic. You'd understand if you've spent time on a bike :) it's called defensive riding. And yes I've gotten tickets for it.

When I rode my idea of defensive riding was staying as far as possible from cars. Unfortunately the Phoenix metro are has long ago become too damn dangerous to ride. I want to get a bike, but mainly for short trips, night time, and out of town. Riding here during the day, especially during rush hour, is borderline suicidal no matter how careful you are. So Cal is even worse. I bet the lane splitters don't have a long life expectancy.

And someone else brought it up, but I have to agree: guys on cruisers generally ride more sanely. It always seems to be the young dumbass punk on a rocket who is acting like an idiot.

I spend quote a bit of time in traffic all over SoCal and as such see plenty of lane splitting. There is no way it's safe for any bike to pass a car within 1 or 2 inches and a difference in speed of 10 - 15 mph or more.

I may have not bud, but I've got common sense and a firm grasp of physics and find it hard to believe that more speed in close quarters thereby lessening both you room and time to make adjustments when a car does something unexpected is in any way defensive lol!

Just to clarify; I no way endorse those close fly by's, I was referring to riding faster than the flow of traffic. Riders on the whole I've found to be more considerate and aware than drivers. It's a matter of self preservation :)

Yes. I'm no longer riding due to more cars on the road, my eyesight for night time riding sucks, and I was finding it totally exhausting trying to maintain 100% vigilance. My reaction time is lacking as well. In a nutshell I decided I'm too old for riding. Not sure when it happened but I turned mortal :)

It's not the speed. If a biker is going 5ish mph faster than average traffic, he's mostly overtaking them and thus watching out for the cars (in front of him). If a bike is traveling at or below the average speed of traffic, more cars are passing him and the drivers have to watch out for him. Sadly, drivers watching for a bike in traffic is proven to be far less effective than a rider watching out for cars.

Also, in SoCal, the cruisers aren't any more sane than the sportbikes. You just notice the cruisers doing the flow of traffic because they're still loud whereas most sportbikes moving with traffic are likely to have stock pipes and not noticed.

Lastly, SB-350 just got shot down in legislature and is considered dead so lane splitting will continue to be legal for a while. :)

I have spent plenty of time on a bike and have never split lanes. Probably because my Yamaha Vino 125 scooter isn't freeway legal:)

Ya the seasons short, but it's still something I have to have. Just have to wait month or two now. Though every once in a while I take it out in the cold with just a sweet shirt and jeans for like two miles. Its a fun thrill, but you freeze. I kind of like the freeze a bit, and then hate it.

I disagree, its not a myth and they do help and yes some are real loud, to loud. They do their job by gettin people to look around twice. Parkin lots are the worst. There are so many people that just don't pay attention. As it was said earlier. 2,3 and four wheels it doesn't matter either. A simple fender bender for cars in a parkin lots, that we see all the time. Has much more of an impact when on abike.
