I keep copies of all my photos and videos on an SD card in my camera, on my Laptop and a portable hard drive. One night while I was at dinner, I realized that all three copies were in my Hotel room. I decided I needed a network based backup. Since the photos I have on photo bucket are reduced from the native 12 Mpx to 0.5 Mpx, I don’t consider that an adequate backup. So I did some research and decided to go with "Dropbox" since the first 2 GB is free and with referrals, facebook links, ... you can get up to 18 GB for free. I really like how easy Dropbox is to install and use and they have an app for my Droid phone which provides access to all my photos from my phone too. I set it up to auto sync my camera to a folder in dropbox, so within minutes of connecting my camera to my computer I can see my photos on my phone. I also backup my cell phone photos so I can access them from my computer.

So if you're interested in using Dropbox here is a link that will take you to their site and give my another 500 MB of free storage space http://db.tt/r6zgBkw2 . Feel free to add your referral link to this thread so people can give you referrals. As soon as I get to the 18 GB maximum I'll take my referral link down so others can get the benefit of referrals.

Online Backup services are good for what they provide (backing up all the data on a computer), but Dropbox is different. Dropbox provides file sharing and provides much easier sharing of files, photos and videos between your computer, cell phone, friends and family. Dropbox is a great value if you use the free 2 to 18 GB. If my work didn't provide online backup, I'd probably use CrashPlan or Carbonite. However, even if I had CrashPlan or Carbonite I'd still use DropBox to share my photo's with my cell phone, family and friends. It is the ease of use and file sharing that sets Dropbox apart.

Big fan of Dropbox . . . and CrashPlan and SmugMug. Dropbox is used for files I need everywhere (along with Google Drive). Crashplan is my 400GB backup of my files and I find it less expensive than Carbonite, at least last time I checked but it could have changed. SmugMug allows me to host, link, secure, etc. all of my pictures with unlimited space and at original resolution, though it is $60 per year. Each service has different benefits for me and I use each one frequently.

Evernote is my newest savior - I copy parts lists, diagrams, pics etc. to Evernote on my PC, sync it to my phone and then have an easy reference at the hardware and auto parts store or when doing the repair. Made the HVAC repair a lot easier to execute with a copy of Hunner's pic and parts list on my phone.

But, back to topic . . . Dropbox is a great tool!

Personally, I never liked leaving my data in the hands of others. I am running a Linux server at home with a 2TB storage array and a tape backup. I rotate ten tapes weekly and make monthly archives that are kept locked at work.

I am warming up to the idea of having my data hosted. I was one of the victims when Google lost many GMail boxes over night from a software error. They recovered all my data via tape over the following week. Since my phone automagically syncs its data with Google, I am finding I am using Picasa a lot more.

Whatever you use, it is a good idea to have multiple locations for your data.

2 USB drives at home with mirrored backups. Crashplan for all files. SmugMug with all pictures. Picasa with many pictures. Google Music with most of my music. I've got pretty good redundancy. I've got pretty good redundancy.

And for those that are curious - the H4O backups are in at least three different places in case our host fails.
