Averaging about 18 so far. Best tank was 19.7. Right now my torque converter is not locking up and I am still trying to diagnose the problem. That is costing me some mileage. I also have not tuned a single thing on the engine since I do not have gauges hooked up. A timing bump should net some more mileage. I think I will need 3.73 gears to take full advantage of the power curve and efficiency of the engine. I think 22MPG is achievable with tuning and gears and everything running well.

Just finished my break-in oil change (a little late). I've just sold my house and am moving at the end of next month so progress will be slow until that happens. Hopefully I can start wrapping up the loose ends and start dialing this thing in.

At 65 I'm about 2200 RPM with the converter not locking properly. At 70 I'm about 2400. When the converter was locking right, those numbers were about 200 RPM less. 3.73 gearing on 35s should get me 70 mph between the sweet spot 1800-1900 RPMs. I figured a regear was going to be necessary, just wanted to get it rolling and debugged before tackling that part.

Yeah, 2200 is definitely hurting your fuel economy. Ideally you want to be as close to 1700 as possible.

I finally figured out the path I am going to take on the intake. I had lunch with a business contact last Friday and he showed me something he used on the intake of his late model Ford truck. The hose is known at the local rubber and hose supply store simply as "cotton picker hose". It is a very tough impregnated fabric hose supported with a spiral wound wire. It looks similar to dryer hose but much tougher and its rated to 200F to boot. I went down and picked up 2' of it and some hose clamps for $22.

I wanted to be able to try and reuse the factory airbox, 1) for a factory look, and 2) it pulls from the fender so it does a good job of keeping water and stuff out of the intake when off road. The factory MAF sensor run is part of the airbox and runs right into where I have my AC compressor mounted. Knowing that wasn't going to get reused, I chopped that off with a hacksaw and test fit the intake hose and the airbox. The routing would work, but the intake location on the airbox needs to move. I cut out enough to snake the intake hose through the side. I used the generic 3" filter I bought and a piece of 3" pipe as a coupler and mounted the two together inside the airbox. From here the plan is to clean up the hole in the side of the airbox and bond a piece of aluminum plate with a clean 3" hole in the exact location. As a second plan, I may stub a piece of 3" pipe through the plate and clamp the intake hose on the outside and the filter on the inside.

Here is the filter and hose laying inside my dirty airbox. You can see the small stub where the old intake came in and the hack job behind it to make a hole big enough for the hose.

Here is another view from the top showing the intake hose.

And a view of the engine bay. I need to clean up the intake box and make it pretty. The box is real close to the AC compressor but I don't se any contact marks yet.

Please tell me that's not a K&N filter letting dirty air into your Cummins?

I've seen the debates on K+N filters about the supposed bad. I've personally run them on anything I have owned including the H3 which survived most of its 260,000 mile life with one on it and probably less than desired cleaning intervals. I may look at running a dry type or maybe even the factory paper element if it will clamp to a 3" intake tube. I drove the engine swap around for 2 months with an open intake so what is on it now is way better than nothing.

Now that I know that I can fit the factory airbox, I just need a generic 3" filter of the type I plan to run that just has to fit inside of there.

Just a boring trip up the street. Cabin is pretty quiet when underway. I really need to get my front end rebuild underway.

how much would you charge someone to do a swap? just curious!

I'm just a guy with a regular day job just like most everyone here. If you are even mildly serious about it I can help you assemble the parts list and guide you pretty well on the steps. I'm working on getting all the brackets templated to be able to offer them up as a set. I will likely also offer to do wiring harnesses. I haven't had the time to wrap up all the loose ends up on my project, much less tackle this other stuff yet.

I was born and raised in Lafayette. Graduated from UL. Been in Shreveport for 9 years now. I don't plan on ever selling this thing unless its to build something else. Maybe a 4bt H2.

Motor mounts and wiring would certainly be a great piece of kit to offer!

Perhaps one day I'll be getting a package from you in the mail :)

Awesome, I moved to Lafayette 6 years ago after I graduated from LSU. Born and raised in SE Louisiana. A 4bt H2 would be sweet.
