Recon - why do you list nightforce as 2nd tier? I've always heard they were among the best scopes you could get.

It doesn't have the quality glass of the Germans which makes a huge difference in low light. It's not that it's bad like the cheap scopes, it's just that the top scopes are just outstanding. I remember using a Zeiss scope at night one time where I could actually see better through it at 12x than with my bare eye. That's the big difference. Also in a recent test Nightforce fell short in reticle calibration and knob adjustments. The click adjustments were off and so was the reticle.

that's good to know. I recently bought a CZ 550 ultimate hunting rifle, which is supposed to be manufactured to even higher standards than their normal rifles, and a 550 in .308 and I'm looking for scopes for both of them. I'm going to look at some of the other ones you recommended.

With scopes I strongly suggest you get one of the known and proven brand names. At the top are Zeiss/Hendsoldt, Kahles, Schmidt & Bender, US Optics, Steiner. Next step down is IOR Valada, Nightforce, Vortex, Bushnell, etc.

"Ex Umbris Venimus"

Recon what is your take on this scope. I really like it so far for what I read it does and it has. Only little problem it is about as expensive as my rifle. XP but I'm willing to go 6-12 months without a scope just to get this one.

Anything Zeiss makes is top notch! The quality of the glass is about as good as it gets. I'm just not partial to so much electronics. Makes sure you get it with the Mil reticle which I think is #43, and metric adjustments. Don't use the BDC. That's cope uses the Zeiss rail system which is designed for hunting rifles. This means you can't use standard scope rings. I only know of one company that makes a Zeiss rail to picatinny mount. It's a German company called Recknagel.

Yeah electronics that's my only concern. I mean I like the part where you have both in one glass and rangefinder...only down side I could think of, it is if one goes down the other might too. So you have 2 no working devices.

The other thing I don't like about the scope is that the reticle is in the second focal plane. That means the Mil reticle is only 1:1 at one specific magnification. If range finder takes a dump, I do believe that you can still use the scope the normal way. That's why it's important that you get the metric knobs and not the BDC.

Thanks I didn't notice that part about the mount...I guess I'll just have to look for something else...there's this other glass I like from Zeiss. Only thing is that they don't have too much variety. Specially for reticle

i would just go something mid range and go for a acog, or one of trijicon's magnified optics or an elcan, thats what most high speed people i know are using, a little pricey too but not too terrible since you paid that much for the rifle.

The acog was my first choice, I have used and loved them ACOG on my M4 and M249 as well it is well built and can take a beating. but I want something that can have a little bit of more zoom and features, at this point I'm really considering just going with the Leopold Mark 6 since it is a 1-6x20 and it is in a 34mm tube...as well it has a adjustable illuminated reticle which can be use as a red dot for close quarter. I just don't know man...I'm guessing I'm just gonna have to adventure and learn.

I seriously recommend you stay away from Leupold. They're no longer the brand they used to be. The horror stories online are nonstop. I personally have encountered problems with their spotting scopes.

No I'm not but I'm gonna check them out. However this local place where I bought my rifle from has really low prices in their stuff. But it never hurts to check

I'm trying to stay away...but so far i haven't seen anything else that seems good or within the aspects I'm looking for, but nothing is decided for sure yet...I'm really taking my time buying my first scope.

Vortex, Bushnell, US Optics, IOR all make 1-6 scopes that would most likely meet your requirements without having to deal with headaches. There are many other cheaper brands that also make 1-6 scopes. Bushnell, US Optics, S&B make excellent 1-8 versions. I have both the 1-6.5 and 1-8.5 Buhsnell scopes and have abused the hell out of them. They have performed flawlessly and are Mil/Mil scopes with first focal plane BTR2 reticle. It has an illuminated horseshoe reticle very similar to Eotech and works great at all magnifications. The illumination adjustments are very slick because you can turn it of between clicks. This allows you to pic the illumination strength you like and turn it off there without having to go back to zero every time. I have absolutely nothing to do with Bushnell and gain nothing from recommending them. I bought mine from Amazon and SWFA.

US Optics really is in a realm of its own because it is the only true 100% custom scope manufacturer out there. You can chose everything from the reticle to color to location and style of knobs. It uses German Schott optics which is excellent but not quite at the level of Zeiss. I have one of their 5-25 scopes and really like it. I had it made with the windage knob on the left so I can adjust the windage without lifting my head. I would love to have one of their 1-8 scopes, but unfortunately right now I have other financial priorities. If you can afford it, go for it! It's the Ferrari of all scopes.

Since its a gun thread I thought I would ask you guys what do you do to prevent rust? I have dehumidifier in safe but what oil and things do you guys use that work? And how to apply do you let it soak or wipe completely dry?

Frog Lube has been proven to be one of the best rust inhibitors. They actually have a process that requires heating it to get the frog lube right into the pores. I just wipe it on and leave it on. If you do the inside of the barrel, which you should, make sure you leave something in the chamber or barrel that indicates this so you remember to clean it before shooting it next. You don't want to shoot a "wet" barrel. I also use a dehumidifier just in case I missed a spot.

Well I been wanting a 22LR for a while but none of them look appealing to me. Except for the stg44 .22LR and it seems that this Black Friday sales has just come in, on time.
