Government shut down...

I already moved to another country...Texas. Another day of government shutdown for the Feds. I think that deserves it's very own Happy Hour. Let's all celebrate another day with minimal federal government activity. The EPA is operating with only 6.6% of it's workforce...that is where it should be all the time. IRS at 10%, another department that we should do without. ( Flat tax )

The problem with minimal government activity is alot of those guys are good guys, I'd like to think I'm one of the good guys.
The ones we need minimal (read: no activity) from are still on the clock and screwing things up as normal.....

I agree these people on furlough are good Americans just like us, but they made a decision to work for our Government. That's on them. If I went to work for a company that had shut downs 17 times since 1995...I'd at least make sure I was prepared for such eventualities.

Some of us work for the government because we actually feel that we can contribute to a successful and meaningful mission. When the SHTF and everyone is running about in a panic, some of us will be continuing to do the same thing that we do, day in and day out.

I am still working my job, even though I am at risk of not getting paid. Am I stupid? Sometimes my co-workers and I think we are; this week has been a frustrating and tiring week... and it's not over yet. :sigh:

Yes, I agree that the idea that we work for an organization that is constantly reducing the budget while expecting to produce at a level that exceeds the previous year is a bit stupid. If it was only about the money, I would get a job elsewhere. The money is not the motivating factor for me and the people that I work with. The satisfaction of the job is the motivation.

I served in the Navy for 24 years. When I retired in 2001, I didn't feel that I was ready to "retire" so I continued in my field of expertise as a government employee. I remember that day in September like it was yesterday. I remember the concern that we had with respect to the number of aircraft that were a threat. The blast doors to the Cheyenne Mountain Complex were closed and locked. The first time in history that the doors were closed for a real world event.

I have been continuing to hone my expertise and provide my service to the country and my fellow Americans over the past 12 years. There is a massive amount of bad publicity regarding the government and the stupid things that people of all ranks have been doing. Across the population, every sector of society has a percentage of morons. The problem is that in a highly visible profession, those morons draw the attention and stick out like a beacon.

What the public does not see is the hard work and analysis that is performed 24/7/365 in order to keep this country safe from attack. Yes, I guess I am dumb. My wife worries that I might not get paid for the hours I am working during this shut-down. She is kind of irritated that my days are longer this week than last week; that is because some folks were sent home. When everyone in the office is giving 110% and you take away 80% of the workforce for a furlough, the mission still keeps going forward.

Get your facts right there have NOT been 17 government shutdowns since 1995...
This is the 12th shutdown since 1981. The last and longest shutdown occurred from December 1995 into January 1996 under the Bill Clinton administration and spanned 21 days. It came just a month after a six-day shutdown in November 1995.

What you don't understand, Doug, Is that there is a large number who hate all government workers; regardless of what you do. Enough of them for me to say F@@@ IT!

The government employees that most need to be replaced are the 535 in Congress, the attorney general, Pres, VP, HSA head and Jay Carney. Clearly there are a few in Congress worth a damn and clearly the government is bloated with employees we don't need and can't afford but the 535 +2 are the real problem.

This Summer we lost 6 days of pay in order to save the govt money. I am sure that we will have administrative furlough days this year also.

We just keep working anyway.

No comprende on your work status here Doug? I signed a paper saying it is illegal for me to go to my work, period. Either you've been furloughed, or you've been excepted to stay on the clock and work---there is no in between. I don't anticipate the work police filing in and arresting me if I took it upon myself to go to work, but I also don't see any reason to be there when it was made plain to me to stay away.

I also served for 22 years active duty and after my final years of being treated like a dog, realized that yes, life would go on after I was gone, no matter how much I contributed or loved the sense of having a job that mattered. Don't confuse this with loving my job, it absolutely sucked, was life draining and had me on the edge of losing my mind. I loved serving the greater purpose for my country regardless of how horrible that job was.

I too, chose to continue serving as a civilian, but as much as I really love my job now, I'll wait for my call to return to work.
Gotta get back to my nap and other things I'd do if I was permanently retired........

My status is "exempt" and my document says that I am REQUIRED to be at work and MAY NOT be compensated for the hours. I was directed to file a time card with "KE" (which is the timecard code for furlough) for the 32 hours Tuesday-Friday.

Friday afternoon, we were then directed to fill out our time card documenting the hours worked.
Today (Saturday) I understand that DoD has decided that the pay will be retroactive upon a CR being passed.

Yes, I have all of this in writing from the Director of HR for my agency.

Others who were given the furlough paper and told to go home, have been at home. DoD (from the press) says that they will get paid, but they don't know exactly when they will be ordered back to work.

Wow - Wait...what???. I don't "hate" all Government Employees. I have always felt the Military and those who protect our Country to be exempt from such idiocy, and I agree with Dave that all 535 members of our legislature is a good start.

I do despise the Land Use Agencies (DOI and USDA), the EPA, and the rest of the laws and personnel put in place to erode our right to freedom, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Anyone who can put forth a law that will put me in Jail, and I don't get to vote for or against it is a waste of my tax payer dollars.

The way this whole thing is being handled is to further divide an conquer the American People. And I may not like a persons Job and what they do, but that doesn't mean I dislike the person. There is a difference you know...It's not personal.

I meant no disrespect to those who SERVE or who have SERVED this Nation.

I believe in limited Government and limited regulations and laws. Period.

Excuse me - I stand corrected and I apologize for not taking the time to count them myself.

After researching I have discovered it has been 17 years since the last shutdown and there have been 17 shutdowns since 1977. And honestly, I wouldn't believe any media outlet anymore, I may just have to go back and count them myself. But where to find the actual data?

He and his supporters are too busy crowing "the Republicans caused it" to realize they spent money to shutdown things that usually take little to no money, and tried to shutdown private parks.

I'm one of those guys that has something against most government employees. The IRS, the EPA, the CIA, the FBI, the DHS...most of them can be eliminated completely or cut by 90%. I really wish it was an across the board shutdown; none of this "pick and choose" for the most harm BS. That's just as bad as towns claiming they "have to raise taxes or the police, fire, and education will see cuts" when really they're neglecting to point out that their pet projects got paid first and that's why the town is out of money.

And twinmill? How is Canada's system NOT socialized? They don't pay for medical care directly.

closing down open air memorials
sending more park rangers to enforce the closing of the memorials than aid to Benghazi
shutting down the Amber Alert website but keeping the US Botanical garden website up
ordering military chaplains to be arrested for ministering and or praying during the shutdown
