Has anybody rolled their HUMMER?

This has been on the back of my mind for awhile---out of all the wheeling we do in all the locations we go (with Moab probably being the most wheeled)---has anybody rolled their HUMMER, 1, 2 or 3?

I've been very close with my 3 twice, once when I destroyed the tie rod/half shaft and was dancing on 1 tire in a really bad spot on the mountain; the other time I had just gotten back from Iraq and was hell bent on stuffing the 3 into a V-notch where it was almost resting on its side.

I've also been close in the deuce one time, trying to climb a massively steep hill and got sideways fast, it would have been a really long way back down. My buddies eyes were huge when he finally got up to me, and him and a couple other guys wrapped a strap on the front to hold it down while I got straightened out.

What's your hairiest stories of rolling/near rolling?

I have been really tippy but never close to rolling IMO. I have seen any number of rolled Hummers in the Tustin service lot including one H1 Alpha. Apparently mountain roads, ice, snow and inexperienced, brain dead drivers can be a toxic mix.

I haven't but I have been tippy...lol I think the wide track width helps a lot. Even at 7 mile rim where I was told I have been the most tippy h3 on the Mini crack I still had a while to go till a rollover.

In the mud where I was in a sink hole off camber I thought I was gonna rollover but I think it's the pucker factor that keeps me right side up

We flopped JWid's H2 on Hell's Gate in Moab but he was able to come to rest against a wall. Also flopped a side by side on the same trip (part of another group.) I've been in groups where we rolled a Jeep, but no Hummers so far.

in my younger days i rolled a honda accord and a toyota 2-wheel drive truck . the car was when i was doing fishtails on a dirt road and the toyota was on wet pavement both were totally driver error :emb:

I'd add my little off-topic/ NC (nonsensical c***, as ref'd to on my other mailing lists) bit...
back in May '99...in my previous working life some HS kid saw cars braking ahead while he was playing the stereo too loud and not paying attention...he jumped the curb and hit my company van broadside as I was turning in to the office driveway....



I was left hanging in my seatbelt. Definitely a weird, unexpected feeling...

Speed seems to be a factor with h1 rolls I've seen the aftermaths off, usually too fast for conditions combined with soft soil, or making the wrong turn off camber.

I know at least 2 H1's bit it on those steep hills in Hungry Valley which blows my mind, but I know one where the driver lost traction near the top and decided to do a u-turn off camber on the side of the hill rather than back down straight. That will flip the rig over no problem.

I worked on the Hulk 2 film, during the university chase sequence with the hmmwv's, the crew flipped one on grass, they were making high speed turns 45-50 mph with a helicopter flying above and the soft soil and sod and those big wheels acted like shovels, they dug in deep and fliped the truck over, corner over corner...

Lucky the stunt gunner ducked inside or he would have been crushed. No one was seriously hurt and they ended up using that footage in the final film, we just added a CGI hulk smashing into it before the flip.

Some great stories so far--and seems to be kind of confirming my suspicion; we're not rolling the trucks when we are intentionally wheeling them. Mostly dumbasses doing stupid things is what gets it.
Also, the other vehicles you know that have rolled are cars we don't care about---for some reason, Jeeps fall into this category--which brings me to cost; do more Jeeps roll because they are cheaper to roll/fix than HUMMER's--or are the drivers knuckleheads vs. HUMMER drivers, who seem to be more cautious?

I think rolling is more about bad decisions which is usually from inexperience (or alcohol). The Jeep I was with was new to wheeling and he panicked on a bad hill, which cause the rollover. The side by side flop was simply the driver's refusal to disengage his front locker, which was preventing him from steering into the correct line. The H2 was due to too low of profile of tires, a decision that (in my opinion) would have been addressed had he had more experience with that tire/wheel combination.

I also think there's a direct correlation between rolling and trailering the vehicle. Those that use their rides as daily drivers are much less likely to enter into high risk scenarios. If it is just a secondary vehicle then people can take more risk due to the lower consequences if they fail.

Forgot to add this rollover. This guy wasn't in our group. We were stuck on the trail and doing a repair when this guy stops about 50 yards from us with a wheel over the edge of the trail. We yell up that we would help drag him back onto the trail but instead he puts it in reverse, stomps on the gas and digs himself a hole that resulted in him rolling 100' down the embankment.

His actions were fueled by Budweiser as evidenced by the cans that dumped out of his buggy and the alcohol on his breath. He was airlifted out to a hospital.

So, now that I've been near or involved with four rollovers and flops - who wants to go wheeling with me???

We have had some close moments. But never went over. I had one time on 2N17X where the front came up and seemed like it was just going to keep going. Cbetts saw it in his mirror. He got on the radio and told me I had no oil leaks lol. I would have only flopped it though. Will post some pics of close ones from the archive later
