Stumbled onto this site while frustrated from pulling the rack and pinion out of my 2007 H3. For better or worse, its out now. The new one arrives tomorrow.

Welocome to the forum! Glad to have you here.

Sorry to hear and see the steering rack like that. It sure is a familiar site for us H3/H3Ters! Can we offer up any info. to help you out? Looks like you got it figured out but if you need any help, just let us know. Since you are already working on the front-end and have it apart, you might as well check your front diff crossmember bushing for wear and to make sure that you still have a bushing in there - those things don't last too long.

I didn't think to order a bushing for that. Its taking 2 days to get the rack, if I'd thought of it sooner I would've ordered that bushing as well. That replacement will have to wait. The wife and I are too busy to be sharing a vehicle. Thanks for the offer on the info. My wife is actually a GM engineer and has access to the service manual. I thought I had everything printed out that I needed but forgot some of it. I also managed to get the rack out without breaking the front diff loose. I guess tomorrow I'll find out if I can get it back in that way. The upper bolt on that bushed bracket was a pain. I'd be interested if anyone's got any tips/tricks for that one.

Hello kahill! Where are you located in MI? I'm in Bloomfield, about 20 minutes North of Detroit. If you are close enough I'd be glad to lend a hand or a wrench.

small leak and worn out eye bushing causing lateral shifting side to side with turn of the wheel. I've also got about 1.5" steering wheel slop.

Big thanks for the offer to help. I'm located in Milford. The rack went in a lot easier than it came out.

Welcome to the forum. My steering rack got replaced at about 55K miles for leakage also. GM met me halfway on the bill though. I was happy. You can't get the crossmember bushing separately from GM but there is an excellent rebuilt unit available exchange. Very easy swap out.
