High mount brake light replacement

How the heck do you replace this? I removed the two screws that hold it down and popped out the grommet the wires run through but you can't pull the wires out far enough to get to the plug...do you really have to remove the tail gate panel to get to it?

From what I have read you have to pull the rear hatch interior panel to get to it. I did find an easier way, just replace the blown fuse for the brake light and it works again :banghead:

yeah I didn't realize it had its own fuse. The plastic housing on the brake light is cracked so I will be replacing it one day soon.
