and that is why I leave my hitch in 24/7. I cant trust the ding dong behind me...If I got rear ended I would only hopefully for neither of us to get damage but if one of us was to get damage I would rather it not be me...

The flat decorative ones or a D-shackle are fine, but 6" of square tubing and a ball or some kind of extended drop hitch is pointless when not in use. My complaint is not damage to other cars that rear-end someone, it's walking through a parking lot and catching one on the shin. I think I've only done that once, but that was enough. Not that I care all that much and I'm certainly not going to create a web page, just sayin'.

It was one of my own old jeeps. Had aftermarket bumpers with receiver hitches and D-shackle mounts front and rear. Between the hitch receiver and the shackle mount it stuck out a good 5" from the bumper. Enough to make an Escort driver cry.

Rear bumper was the same.

As a victim of a recent rear-ending incident, I say leave the bastard on. The root cause of the accident was not paying attention and had nothing to do with the hitch.

Yeah, I hate banging my shins on hitches in parking lots myself but it is still my responsibility to watch where I am walking.

I couldn't agree more.

Hell... I seem to bang my shins on my own hitch all the damn time. One day I'll learn.

You'll eat my spare long before you get anywhere near my hitch.

I'm with you Recon. You're doing something wrong if you bang your shin on my hitch. It sits right under my spare, which sticks out just as far as the hitch.
