I remember one cause is high pressure washer wands at self wash and truck stops especially. On the wagons you should keep from blasting the seal/gasket between the roof and wagon body, since the seal is painted over and is hard to the touch, some folks might miss that detail and wind up injecting water into the seal. That's one theory behind the rust.
