Upon Disaasembly we are noticing a few things: My exhaust manifold is cracked. I thought it was as I was hearing noises especially when cold. Looked into a few magnaflow/walker parts. What does everyone have experience with? Was there a TSB on this? It seems like it has been a common problem...

Some time ago, I believe it was 4Speedfunk or maybe trailerpup that did an aftermarket header and had OBDII code problems with it. What's the best solution?

Thanks,

Rob

You fall in the 49-state category as far as smog-allowable parts are concerned. I would go with the Magnaflow exhaust manifold/ cat converter part if I had a choice. It looks like an exhaust header that includes the cat and I think the price is comparable to a stock part.

@Mr_Rich Thanks! It looks a lot better than the two that are on RockAuto and I think the stocker is just going to do the same thing again because its cast. The magnaflow is all stainless. I think Amazon has the best price Ive seen yet..

Root cause was metal shavings clogging the cam shaft actuator. Timing lagged as a result. Piston came up and hit the valves. Put a new I5 in it with the magnaflow direct-fit cat, although I'm already hearing about problems with those from Bud's muffler in town. they recommended another brand, like AP.

I've been on top of oil changes, which leads me to believe that something in the motor was putting out excess shavings. it had been going through oil(although not burning apparently). The new motor is a ATK with a no-fault warranty. $3865 for the motor. $7000 after tax and all the other BS. Was originally quoted 5k, but the exhaust manufold crack was not originally noticed. That part alone was $700.

Hopefully I'll get a year or two out of it and then have time to start a project.

Moral of the story: If that many shavings were in the oil anyway, it was probably a ticking time bomb. Maybe it is the 35's we run, or the mountain pass driving that is in colorado, that add to the strain on the engine, but I think a truck motor should last more than 125k if it has been taken care of from a maintenance perspective. Maybe flush your oil out in between changes if you are over 100k? then again, its bound to happen at some point for every car.
