you'll fit in. there are a lot of mormons here (I'm one) but there are a lot of non-mormons, too. it's a lot more liberal than you think, too. I just moved here, too but I lived in Provo (south of SLC by about 40 miles) for 4 years. Provo is like 90% mormon and it's where BYU is, but the 2 cities couldn't be more different. SLC is more like Austin, TX - full of hippies and liberals. they put on free concerts in the summer and there are a lot of people that ride bikes and the pedestrians and are annoying as crap because they don't know how cross walks work and you will probably get your hummer keyed at some point.

at least you'll be close to moab and a ton of other awesome off roading.

fortunately, I wheel my H3, so I already have pin striping from the trees (I wish they'd just cut them down)... otoh, I have SAR ID on my vehicle so people tend to leave it alone figuring at best they'd get arrested if they touched it and worst, shot (more likely just beat).

It seemed to be overcast alot when I lived there, and I suffered from that depression you can get from lack of sunlight. Come to think of it, I may have had the depression from the ****ty job I had while I was there--or maybe it was both.
It can tend to snow alot, or sometimes very little, but the common thread is it was much colder for much longer than I expected. Summer did get hot, but not for long. Spring is beautiful and it's worth going for hikes in the mountains to see all the color in the trees.
We made some good Mormon friends, and discovered they can teach you what it's like to take care of each other and your family. SLC is Mormon central with the temple in downtown, and their influence is observable in the government and various things in society. Not saying that's a bad thing, things just felt different than where we had come from in the south.
Now for the good part---wheeling opportunities, and lots of them!!! Moab is only 4 hours away, so no excuses not to catch all the black sheep runs. Local trails are abundant and really fun for all skill levels. Jerry Seiner Cadillac, North and South stores, are in Salt Lake and they do an excellent job of maintaining your truck if you choose to use the dealer.
Lots of chances to go camping, we bought a travel trailer while there and really enjoyed alot of the campgrounds. Hiking is also really good all thru the mountains, as is the skiing from what I'm told---I don't understand going out in the weather up in the mountains when it's that cold!
Oh, and there's lots of car show opportunities including the World of Wheels, Peach days in Logan, and the Autorama with all the new cars. We really miss that out here in the middle of nowhere.
We chose not to stay there after I retired out of the Air Force because it was just too cold for our tastes and we already had a house here in Florida.

grey - I live in Seattle now. This year we had sun, it was remarkable, but unlikely to happen again in my lifetime.
I like cold, skiing is my most favorite sport followed by biking, mountain biking and dirt biking. I'm a conservative Christian (SDA) and I tend to get along well with Mormons because there are a lot of similarities in how they raise families and in diet...

you will love SLC, then. it's one of the best areas in the US ever for anything outdoors. there's a ton of 4 wheeling/dirt bike areas everywhere. there's a ton of public land to go shooting or whatever. i love it here.

Not an expert on SLC but Utah in general seems to a great place. Relatively conservative outlook on most of the important things. There are a lot of places in this country now, that unfortunately I could not live. Utah is one of the places I could live.

In that case, you'd probably love it here. I will probably move back to the PNW in 8-10 years, shortly after my youngest turns 18 (he is 10 now). I grew up in OR and have lived in CA and FL. Wife grew up in Southern CA. Both of us miss the Ocean and when we move it will not be to another land-locked state. That's probably the biggest negative for UT for us, not being within a short drive of the Ocean.

I always had dirt bike in my blood, but never owned one until this last year. When I was in Utah they were all over the trails in the mountains and annoyed the heck outta me, always seeming to get in my way. Now that I'm back in Florida, I lucked into a good trade and ended up with a dirt bike and now a quad. I've got to drive at least an hour to go to a motorsports park to ride for $20 a day--in Utah I was 20 minutes away from riding where-ever/when-ever I would have wanted.
As for biking--the place is crawling with awesome trail bikes and good specialty stores and of course, tons of trails to bike.
As for the diet thing---I'd never seen a hamburger with Pastrami on it until we first got to Utah and I asked for what I thought was a regular burger in one of the local spots. Then they asked if we wanted fry sauce. I'd never seen that before.

I don't miss the grey skies a bit, it'll get overcast here for a couple days, but I know beyond a doubt that I'll see the sun again. I was always doubting it there!
And I still don't get that skiing thing---it's freaking cold, the snow is unforgiving, stay indoors. :gaah:

8We moved to HEBER city about 20 years ago from Las Vegas and have not wanted to go back to Vegas at all. We moved to Park City, where all my work is, about 3 years ago and love it. As for SLC, we are 25 minutes away and 2 of our 3 kids live there without grand kids. Depending on where you settle, the Wasatch front has about a 60 mile corridor from Ogden to Spanish Fork, you really can't go wrong. If you want to getaway from the hustle and bustle, the back of the Wasatch is pristine living! Having said all that, it is cold! Keeping options open to escape for a few days or weeks in January to someplace warm, is wise. We are not part of the Mo Tribe, and moving to Heber in the 90'a with 95%LDS, we found our little Southern Baptist church and settled right in! Politically speaking, (this might offend some) there is not many states that you can move to that has such strong support for conservatism.i.e. Mike Lee. But if your not into that sort of thing, we welcome Libs as well. All in all a great place. As for the grey skies in December and January, the mountains are a 20 minute drive to escape the inversion!

I lived in SLC (Sugar House to be exact) during 2002/ 2003. Loved it there! If I had a chance to move out of Denver, I'd move back there in a second!!!! The commute around the metro area is a breeze compared to the Denver Metro area. The cost of living ranges depending on what you're looking for and where you expect to settle in. Park City area is one of those places that I go to and have a very hard time leaving. It's a hike to commute to SLC every day, but a small price to pay to be able to live there IMHO.
If you can find work, I'd jump at the chance.

if I were to give odds, I'd say it's more likely than not that we're moving... still, to say my friends here are against it would be quite an understatement.

as for jobs, she's got a job - and there's reciprocity, so I'll always have a job as long as people can't get along.... with that said, I'm really, really considering a career change when I get there...

I understand the cold, but I suffer pretty badly in hot (95 plus) weather - I have migraines that heat is the #2 cause of them (stress being #1)..... so not getting warm/snow/ice is actually pretty appealing to me.
