OIL SEAL LEAK! Quick question

Forum!

My H3's rear oil seal is leaking (between back of engine & gear), and it needs replacement. This requires the job where the gearbox is dropped in order to access the oil seal itself (BIG JOB).

MY QUESTION
Does part of this job include undoing the Differential cross-member? or is that unnecessary?

Any input would be greatly appreciated... References or proof would be wonderful if available.

Thanks guys!

The reason I'm asking is as follows:

I recently dropped off my car at the dealers for the oil seal fix, upon inspection, they told me that my differential bushing needs urgent replacement. I told them not to replace it because I'm getting the upgraded CrossMember kit from this forum.

I called their head mechanic a few days later to check up on the car and he hinted that they went ahead and replaced the damaged CM, I didn't ask more questions because I knew that if I put him in a corner, he would just say that it was necessary to remove it in order to reach the oil seal, and that it was too damaged to be put back (I've been put in such situations before)!

Seeing that I wasn't prepared for this sort of argument, I decided to let it slide unnoticed, do some investigating and come back with a solid argument tomorrow when I go to pick up my truck.

Everyone knows how expensive and useless the original CM is, so I intend to ask for a huge discount in case they decided to ignore my instructions and replace it (but only if I'm sure that doing so was not necessary for the oil seal job).

Hope this clarifies where I'm coming from.

Tell them you are not paying for a part you didn't authorize being replaced. Especially after they asked and you refused. Case closed.

But he does have a point with the part being to damage to reuse, anytime this would happen with me I would show the custom the part and we would cut part and labor in half.

That would seem like a fair solution... But that would mean holding off on the CM upgrade (for now)...
I'm dishing out 6k on fixes and mods over the next couple of days and would benefit from every penny saved.

Anyone else have any idea if replacing the oil seal requires the removal of the Differential Cross member?

It is NOT necessary to pull the front diff crossmember when removing the transmission from the vehicle.
Basically you remove the front/rear prop shafts, transfer case, then the transmission. Not one of these procedures make note of the front diff crossmember. The dealer is trying to pick up some more work; thus more money. If you told him not to change it, tell him he did it for free. At no time should anyone pay for anything not authorized. If the dealer considered it a safety problem (which is stretching it) then they need to inform you and you then have the right to move onto another dealer.

Agree 110%, they should prove to you in person before anything is done. In the end the customer is right and what they want done should be done, if they feel the risk is to high ask the customer go to another shop. Nothing wrong with that at all.
