motor mounts are done...

I knew I'd find a use for the land rover jack....

left v. right, left is 2" narrower than the right side, so I got to cut my motor mount apart... easy as pie
if you look at the frame, you can see the mount resting over the frame

2" narrowed

the mount itself moves back about 6" on the frame

and there it is.... one thing to consider if you're doing this - the motor isn't exactly perpendicular to the ground because if it were, the oil pan would be too close to the driveshaft...

a lot of progress, not much to see -

also got the driveshafts in, last trans mount done, throttle cable installed and the shifters in.... I should have the fuel system done in another day or so.

This weekend I was at the Overland rally, and there were countless (okay, 4, I counted) 300 tdi diesel defenders.... I talked to the owner of Defender's NW and he let me take pictures - I'm sure everyone else would have as well, everyone there was super nice.

air pipe routing

coolant pipe routing

I asked "why the stainless wire on the bolts?" apparently, there are sleeves on the other side of those bolts and if the bolts back out, the sleeves drop into the motor... from what I understand, that would be bad

this picture made it all worth it. You can see the oil lines and the fuel lines

one interesting bit... so the air cleaner is the large, round tube .... which is yet another part I didn't get - but - the one he sent me was from a discovery (yay)

back to work on this (at least for a day or two)

things are starting to lay out right.... now to turn the LR around so I can put it up on the lift and finish the fuel lines

Progress tonight
First guess, right fitting.... err.. not guess, consumate skill... (yeah, right, closer to unbridled luck).

the "other" fuel filter... it actually doesn't have a paper filter inside, it's more a settling container to get the big crap out - do I think it's needed? probably not

big hole

I feel like I'm two fasteners away from having the interior completely apart

anyway, tank is back in and the access is uncovered so that tomorrow my delivery from the UK - the diesel pickup - can be installed and I can mark "done" on the fuel system

continuing on... fuel system is completely connected

I bought a sender for a 300 TDI, fits like it was made for it
I did learn something, I guess, the ferrell are called "olives" in UK

of course, you should put all seals on before you put it together.

then onto the oil lines

a decidedly more home-spun solution

stock lines to an adapter to AN and stainless lines with an oil cooler on the front side. I figure with the turbo, having a separate oil cooler will pay dividends in longevity.

I don't have to work on the Heep, it's new... though, I imagine that if she likes the LR better, I'll be driving the Heep... I've already scoped out replacing everything with GM running gear.

and last, but certainly not least for tonight

I've now got the intercooler mounted on the bottom... tomorrow I'll make brackets and remove the egr inlet

and start thinking about the hardest job (for me) .... wiring

time to fix the no shift issue

yeah, an interlock was my issue...

anyway, I resealed the transmission and no leaks... now, back to where I left off before I pushed it outside

I know it doesn't look liked I did anything, but I did get a lot closer to making noise.

power steering pump is hooked up, the cooling lines are run
I have to weld in a nipple for the heating line... build brackets for the radiator and intercooler... and make the hydraulic clutch line... then do some rudamentary wiring... it doesn't have to be perfect :)
my goal is to make it run before I get the parts to start back on the land cruiser... then I can move it in an out of the shop under its own power - and if I run across someone who's sick in the head...errr... someone who enjoys wiring - making all the e-bits work will suddenly be their problem

and then there's this really evil thought in the back of my head to find a scrambler body and put it on the D2 chassis... I could piss off the purists in two worlds: the old world and new world

I debated posting this up since it's such a minor part; but I think it's important to underscore the idea that inch by inch - it will get done....

this is the tube that connects the intercooler to the turbo - and good way to get a more reliable 300 tdi and more hp is to eliminate the egr system... this is a pain because it's chalk full of dirt, diesel, and oil - and they brazed it... who brazes anything anymore?!!! ah well, so the PITA is closer

for those who don't weld - brazed joints TIG welding a pain because it pushes away the argon shielding gas

that white chalk is part everdur and part weld contamination

Saw a 2003 v8 for sale today and remembered your build so I said let me snap a pic to show ya. I've got another one i see daily that I'm not sure what year or model but it's definitely sweet. I'll see if I get some good shots to post here. You probably know all about it. Hope alls well, sweet build, take care.

cool - I'd avoid 2002 up because they have the transfer case that doesn't have 4 lock, especially since I'm not sure you can make SLABS happy with the diesel... you can swap cases, but it's an added expense.

 True that, I'll get those pics of that other one I mentioned. I've never seen anything like it in the rovers discoverys I seen but I like it. Well until then, later.

Rovers make sense, they have excellent visibility; a compliant suspension; reasonable power; an aluminum body; and decent fuel economy. Their stability system works pretty well.... but like anything, they have their detractors too; but the bones have a lot of potential - and they're cheap....

I like how they're keeping it pristine for me :)

I own one of just about everything - they all have their goods and bads. That said, if a Defender came my direction (more specifically, a D90) it would quickly get the diesel that's currently in my D2.
