Rear Fender Extension Removal

What is the CORRECT way to remove the fender extension? Looking at it, I thought it just pulled straight off, but I immediately broke a clip. I then released the catches on the clips from the extension and lifted it straight up. That worked, but I don't think that's the right method either. If I decide to replace the clip I broke, is there a part number? I'm fine with Dorman or other aftermarket on something that inconsequential. Thanks in advance. Screenshot_20200520-182019.png

I pulled all my fenders when I had them LineX. Most of my clips broke so you are doing it the right way, but using trim tools helps and minimizes damage. I bought my replacements from Amazon. GM 11589182

Awesome! Thanks for the info and P/N. After 12 years and plenty of scrapes on the trails, that's definitely not the only broken clip, I'm sure. I may never bother replacing it, but thanks again for the number if I ever do.
