Has anyone attempted to regear their existing transfer case to get a 4 to 1 reduction? can this even be done? If it can , what is needed?
I inquired at the dealer but they have never done this before and couldn't say yes or no. I assume a planetary gear set is needed but I've never
had one of these units opened up.

I think you would be more successful talking to a company that remanufactures gear boxes. Just tell them you want it done with the 4:1 gears instead.

4:1 was a factory option for adventure package H3s. 2.64 is non adventure. You would be going custom if you found a company doing 5 or 6:1

So you can completely swap out the case for an adv. Package one or pull ur existing one and get the necessary gears to swap it out. Depending on the year H3 you have you may want to upgrade the shift fork....the older cases had a plastic one that was known to break...now they have the metal ones...

What year did they switch from plastic to metal?

I know one member explored the regearing option but the individual components were not cheap and I believe his conclusion is that it may make more sense to just buy the 4:1 case and keep the original as a spare. M22 - it is a 4:1 case on the Adventure for the H3.

I personally think that's the best idea.

Cg: I am not 100% sure when they put in the metal one...06 had plastic and I think the upgrade was 07...id wait for F5 to confirm that though.

It was mid 2007 that they changed to a metal shift fork. I've had mine fail already and they swapped it out. Why they ever did that in the first place is beyond me!

While at the dealer today getting my new steering rack installed, I got a parts person to print me a picture and parts list for both the NR4 and NR6 transfer cases. There is only 6 different part numbers between the 2 cases all having to do with the 4lo gearing. Everything priced out at $1325 including tax and shipping. There is also an $85 tool needed to properly install a bearing inside the planetary assembly to the correct depth. Its possible the assembly may come bearing already installed. Book time is about 4 hr to r/r case and overhaul. I'm sure there are used ones out there but how do you know whats going on inside them. Reman units have a core charge plus return shipping on them also. I checked GM Parts House for prices and its cheaper to order from the dealer. I talked to a hummer tech and its an easy case to work on. Hardest part is getting it out of the truck and on the bench. I think I'll wait till after Moab to decide but I'm leaning towards regearing my case. It would make a good Saturday morning project at work. I'd have to put off that new Kimber for I want for a while to pay for it. But I'd survive.

No reason it shouldn't. There are only two transfer cases available for the H3, whether Alpha or I5. The base 2.64:1 and the 4:1.

Kimber vs. Transfer Case - tough call!

The price difference between a new transfer case vs. just the guts is close; it's not a huge difference. BTW, I can't remember: which is the Adventure case - NR4 or NR6? If I recall correctly the 4:1 was actually less expensive than the 2.64:1 case. If you spent a bit more to get a new case (with no core charge) you would have a spare housing. That would come in handy when you run into a situation like Auggie Mathis just described - a broken case.

Other sites, like gmpartsdirect and parts.com, have some aggressive pricing on the transfer case. But you should likely budget $200 or so for shipping. Food for thought.

The 4.10 transfer case is a little cheaper. I don't think there is a core from gm on them. I will check tomorrow. One thing to consider is the warranty on it. Buying parts for it carries a 12/12 warranty. Buying a new t case carries a 24/24 warranty. If it is bought over the counter and not installed by the dealer, it's basically a 2 year warranty as they don't know the mileage you put it in at.

It all depends on whether or not we have a price update. We had a major one in March. If anything, it would only go up like $20 or so

Another thing to consider and check with the dealer. If you are altering your existing t case. The warranty may not apply to the 12/12 since you are modifying it.

I didn't even think to price a complete case at the dealer. After seeing the complete case price on GM parts House, $1300 for the NR6, that's the way to go. Since the dealers parts prices were cheaper , maybe the case would be priced comparatively at the dealer. I'll check in the morning. An extra complete case would be nice to have around.
Even if shipping is $100-$200 , I'd be real tempted to go this route. Wonder if they have one in stock.

I priced a brand new NR6 complete t-case at the dealer for $1300 delivered plus tax. And they will install it for $230. With a 12/12 warranty. And no core charge.
