I may be beating a dead horse, but if I want to get rid of the chrome or at least most of it, how do i go about doing so...

Another option is plastidip. Not as durable compared to regular paint but it is easier to do and remove. There's a wide selection of colors to choose from also.

Depends what pieces you are talking about. Certain things like wheels, grill should be line-x'ed or painted for durability. I had played with plasti dip on a lot of stuff only to find it fades and looks like hell in the AZ sun and eventually ripped all the crap off. It's a waste of time IMO. I tried a can of wrinkle coat-similar to old school valve covers for a finish. Turned out awesome on my fuel door and has held up over time.

I'm just looking to cover up the door handles, maybe the chrome piece on the tail gate, and if i don't get the newer model mirrors, then the chrome face on it

Plastidip is a very cost effective way to get rid of the chrome and it can be peeled off easily if you use enough coats

That's what I would start with

Door handles won't hold up with plasti-dip i learned that the hard way. Plasti-dip is a waste of time unless you just want to see how it looks.

Or fuel doors, pretty much anything that is moved on a daily basis it will not hold up and begin to peel. Some people love it. I guess you could use it to see if you like black on certain parts. That's what I did with my wheels. I didn't even scuff them, just put about 5 coats on each and loved the look until it started looking terrible. Then I peeled it off, scuffed them, and painted with engine enamel.

If you take your time while prepping and use several coats it will hold up much better. It's not supposed to be a permanent solution, but it should last a few months if done correctly

I used 7 coats on my handles and cleaned them with alcohol and they ended up peeling within the first week so I had to put electrical tape over the edges.
