IMHO, not really. In 1997 I paid $900 to ship a sedan from Norfolk, VA to Colorado Springs.

I think the cost goes up if you are "off the beaten path". Along the I-95 corridor may cost less because more competition and more opportunity for other loads.

Indiana to Ft L should be a good route. Then again, diesel fuel is expensive.

$900.... not really that bad. You could hire some kid to drive it for you... nah, $900 not that bad.

Can't make money DeadHeading without charging for fuel and some labor and depreciation.
I custom haul boats and have a special built adjustable trailer but I rarely have a return and usually have to leave out empty to pick one up.
I charge accordingly.
Car hauling I sold the 3 car hauler as I could rarely get a full load both ways. A two car hauler and hot shot hauling is the best and just do special deliveries, point to point.
For exotics an enclosed trailer is a must.
AND a million dollar liability insurance policy.
Fuel mileage drops quick when hauling with a 3/4 or 1 ton.
I go from just the truck at 24 mpg to 10-12 hauling.
Diesel is $4.08 around here. I have a 35 and 90 gallon tank to I can stock up here wholesale.
I sometimes figure it by the hour of driving plus fuel and expenses if it's a Good Buddy deal
IF you can get a small carrier that hauls 4 to 6 cars you might get a better schedule but plan to wait awhile. Most will not give a date of less than three weeks to set up a run. Hard to do.
Figure the mileage, fuel price, labor for the driver, depreciation, meals, lodging and things add up quick.
Depending on how far they have to come from and drive to FLA $1000 sounds cheap to me.

Sounds very high to me! Should be between $0.43 to 0.60 per mile plus you are talking about I-75 all the way down. Plenty of opportunity for the carrier to find other deliveries on the way to FL and get some for the way back.
Shop around! I JUST paid $600 from CO to MI delivered to my door. 1350 miles. Just have to wait for the right deal or an open spot on a carrier and you can get even cheaper than that.

If you are not in a hurry try "Backloaders".

I had a Gobi Rack airfreighted to Australia as a backload for $500 (normally $2000). It took a month but eventually a spot became available as a backload.

We paid $900 to ship my wife's car from Salt Lake to the Florida Panhandle last summer. We put it out on a bid site on the internet and this was the cheapest we got from Will Haul It. The first drivers they assigned were jerks and gave my wife some lip service over the phone because we weren't going to be on the receiving end. A quick call to the company got us a new driver, very professional and addressed our requests for how we wanted the car moved. He called us thru-out his drive with updates on location and finally on his arrival and drop off with our friends here in Florida. We were extremely impressed.
If you can get it for less than $900, awesome, but we live in the real world and needed this thing moved, so the price was ok with us so we could focus on the rest of the move.

If you are looking to do it on the cheep, look in to driveaway services. They basically act as a broker and find somebody to drive your car for you. I haven't looked in to it in a while, but it's fairly inexpensive. The down side is that a stranger is driving your car but they are paying the fuel costs.
