Still need to grind down the leftover of the stock hanger but the added clearance at the hanger is amazing.

I know my friend's tacoma came from the factory with spring over and flat springs. He never had an issue with spring rate/ axle wrap or any other excuses.

She wasn't but had a rake which most dont like but if you could find a different spring then that may help.

I saw a black H3 for sale on ebay earlier this year, (in California somewhere)...and it had a SOA rear with stock front suspension. It looked downright stupid. You gotta do something with front, or try to come up with a flatter leaf spring. The SOA will net you 6.5", and that's a lot more than you might think until you see it done. I think a Rancho front is probably the best solution.

4speed can I set the pinion angle on the jackstands in the garage? I would use a jack to adjust the angle and then you a magnetic inclinometer on the bottom of the pinion where it is flat. Tack em and put it under the truck bolt it all up hook up the DS then see how it looks if all it good then weld it all up.

Thats what I was thinking. Use the new small hangers, stock shackles and flat springs. I hope this is possible, Id love to do this in the future.

Stand-by...I'm taking some measurements and photos.

EDIT: Well...my photos suck. But I can tell you that I think I have 20 degrees between perch angle and pinion angle. The actual installed angles would be something like: "pinion= 12 degrees up, and perches= 8 degrees down". Neither of these sits level in the final position...but there is always 20 degrees between them. So if you want to put your axle on jackstands, and position it so the machined face of the yoke is perfectly perpendicular to the floor....that would set the pinion to "0" (true level). Then set your perches on the axle tube and set them to "0" (also true level). Then...simply rotate the perches 20 degrees forward and tack em in place. That will get you exactly what I have.

The problem with doing this is...every truck is different, and I'm not sure you WANT exactly what I have. You might not be happy with the stance of your truck...and you could totally end up changing the springs or shackles to make further adjustments. If you do...the perches will be several degrees off from where you want them (thats why I need 4-degree shims installed backwards). So this is why you should leave em loose and do the final tack with the driveshaft in place and the truck sitting on the tires. This is very easy to do, and as long as you have the u-bolts and spring plates all installed correctly and snugged up with the center-pins in the holes on the perches...its quite safe. Hook up the driveshaft, bolt on the wheels, and drop it down. The pinion should be pointing "nose-up" but slightly downward from the driveshaft angle by a couple degrees. If its not...just loosen the U-bolts and rotate the housing (using a jack under the yoke) up or down as needed. Don't over-think the pinion angle...its not rocket science. Regardless of where mine or anyone else's is sitting...your yoke needs to be pointing slightly downward from your driveshaft angle. Period.

As far as the other question about the center pin...I'm not sure I understand? I ended up scooting my axle rearward (moving the center pin of the springs to the forward hole on the perches). This was because the extra lift had shortened my wheelbase and I wanted to put my tires back in the center of the wheel openings. This also meant I had to pull my driveshaft out another 1" to compensate. You will probably have to do the same, and that's why the perches come with three holes on them.

Sorry if this sounds so complicated...its really not. Just throw it all under there and hook it up...it will look perfect until you sit the truck down. Then after the springs have wieight on them...everything moves around, and you'll immediately see what I'm talking about. It may take several "stance tests" to arrive at the sweet spot to get pinion angle, wheelbase, and stance all to your liking.

The center pin in the leaf spring, when u installed the leaves was that centerpin directly under the bumpstop or pushed a bit forward or back?

I never noticed. You'll be cutting the bump stops off anyway, to relocate and/or extend em.

Hey Greg, tomorrow I can get a comparison picture for you.

As for todays progress, It is painfully slow. The spring hangers are welded in place. They were tacked before, The perches on the axle are tacked in. The leaf springs are in on one side and the other side is connected on the shackle not the hanger yet. I didnt work on it all day though, This morning I played some basketball to clear my mind from all the metal dust crap that I have been living in for the past few days and then went to lunch so I worked on it from 3-8. Half of that damn time was at home depot. I couldnt find my big crescent wrench then I go home work some more then the holes needed to be enlarged so I go back to home depot to only realize that the 5/8 drill bit isnt for a regular power drill and its for the big boy drill presses so I had to sit there and enlarge it by the dremel. Then the damn springs dont wanna go in so I had to wedge those bastards in. Now I realized I forgot to paint them so I gotta go back and do that.

I can compare the time spent on this is like the lift kit install, nothing too difficult just nothing wants to go right the first time. With an early start tomorrow I hope to get the axle in.

I want to thank 4speedfunk for the exchange of emails and posts and rick (speedy) for the call. I spoke to him and he answered alot of questions. This project is definitely doable for others on here for the guys who are scared to do this the best way is to jump right in. I know I am new to fab and am just a kid in the driveway but you can only learn so much through research on the computer so if your on the fence just go for it, it was a great feeling chopping off those awfully huge spring hangers! Also remember the welds dont have to be picture perfect, just get good penetration through the metal and you should be good to go.

I will get pics up tomorrow but I am getting closer and closer to getting her back on the ground.

"I know I am new to fab and am just a kid in the driveway" ...............

For some reason, that statment just tickles the hell out of me.

I wonder how many other accomplished fabricators/builders started out as "a kid in the driveway"...?

This thread is awesome. Not only is this a great build thread, but it also shows the kind of community that we want to have in our offroad forum. This thread makes me very pleased to be an H4Oer. Keep it up!

I started out as a kid on this forum lol I was 17...now I'm 20 so idk if I'm still a kid. :Hans:

I'm sure plenty started out in the driveway...the main thing is practice I can finally lay some decent beads in the garage on a table with the metal flat but it's totally different underneath a car on a frame in a uncomfortable position with hot sparks showering you its practice one you have the technique

Haha, you have to do the 'hot sparks shuffle' when they creep in under your shirt collar and burn your neck, been there many times... LOL
