Tire problems.... Maybe?

I bought some cooper st maxx tires about 6 months ago and they have 12000 miles on them. Today when i got back from school i noticed some cracking around the outside of the bead on 2 of the tires, is this something that I should be worried about? i normally keep the tire pressure at about 31, and have never aired these down at all, and only gone off road with these once.

Did you buy them new or used? Look at the production date on the sidewall... If you did buy them new, I would take your rig there and tell them you want two new ones. Also, what is the PSI max cold on your tires? Mine is 60 psi and if I am doing my daily driving I keep the fronts at 40 and the rear at 38.. Less weight in the back.

I can't see that as normal wear and tear. I would go back to the tire shop. If they don't respond then I would get in touch with Cooper.

Yeah. For just being a year old, they should not be showing signs like that.. Those are usually age related, and if not which is the case here, its a defective tire.. You have not had them to long, and 12000 aint jack.. Tell them you dont want to hear no crap about pro rating them either....:huh:

That sort of hits home as I just bought a set of those.
I better watch them.
We put them thru some contortions mounting them on the beadlocks but did not see any of that.
Separation between the bead and sidewall like that may be a defective tire or two that somehow did not get cooked good.
I have been reading alot about tires lately.
I pulled this from wiki
"The tire is an assembly of numerous components that are built up on a drum and then cured in a press under heat and pressure. Heat facilitates a polymerization reaction that crosslinks rubber monomers to create long elastic molecules. These polymers create the elastic quality that permits the tire to be compressed in the area where the tire contacts the road surface and spring back to its original shape under high-frequency cycles."

That is a defect in the tire for sure. When I was a tire monkey that would have been a warranty replacement. Not sure how the online guys handle that. Let us kow how they treat you.

so I'm taking the truck to the a tire shop locally that is a "cooper dealer" so they can check out the tires on monday , because the online store that sold them to me, said that it would be too difficult to ship them and everything when the a local tire shop could do the same thing, so that were I'm at right now..... so me being stupid and not checking the backs on the tires before, i decided to check the backs of the tires now , and i was in for one of those holy SH** moments, ALL OF MY TIRES ARE LIKE THAT, especially my spare

Are you talking about the circular cut that goes around the tire about a half inch or less from the rim? Who mounted the tires. From the photos, I would almost say that looks like mounting damage. But, I have mounted some tires on Hunter equipment before and trying to think how that type of damage could be made. I guess the tire factory could do it too. I will be interested to hear what the cooper tire guy says.

So after a few weeks of not being able to drive my car, i finally got enough money together to buy a set of km2s. and from the 15 min drive home i can say they are pretty awesome. They aren't any louder than the st maxx i used to have, but then those tires had 12 thousand miles of wear on them. But i can't say enough good things about these tires. They are BEAST looking !!!

What was wrong with the ST Maxx tires? did you ever find out what caused the cut?

Ya it wasn't any mounting damage or anything, from what america's tire said , they thought it was just a tire defect.
While browsing the web i also found some other cases of the same thing happening to other st maxx owners, I'm guessing these may have been from the same batch, I was thinking that there is a low possibility of it happening with the other batches but after seeing these other cases, i lost all trust in these tires and just went with the km2s. i paid the extra money for the free tire replacement with these tires just to make sure i was covered in case anything happened to these tires. So far with 100 miles I've put on the km2s, I'm pretty happy with them.
