Traction failed -- Service Stab Sys -- Reduced Power -- CEL HELP!

Running offroad yesterday (nothing too major, mostly fire roads with some decent ruts and ledges) in 4HI LOCK for about 2 hours. Suddenly got SERVICE STAB SYS -- TRACTION FAILED -- REDUCED POWER message on the dash, along with CEL and Stabilitrac light. Luckily, I was already past the tougher sections and had only smooth dirt roads left; nursed it home, checked the codes; P0106-Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure/Circuit Range/Performance, P0452-Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch Low, P0641-Sensor Reference Voltage A Circuit Open. Clearing the codes doesn't change anything, it immediately throws them again when you start it up.

So then I tried pulling a few fuses (BCM, TCM, PCM) for a few minutes and reinstalling them, and pulled the battery negative cable too. Waited a few minutes, then reinstalled (boy those battery cable ends suck, don’t they?) Now it wouldn't even start; just cranks. Cleared the codes again, and it started, but ran very rough, misfiring, and then died. Now it will sometimes start, most times not start. When it does start, it bucks and misses, then often dies and won't restart. Clearing the codes seems to allow it to start again, but immediately acts up and throws codes again. WTF?

Another strange thing, maybe related maybe not; sometimes when you try to start it, it keeps cranking even after you release the key back into the run position. I have to turn the key back to ACC for the starter to stop cranking. It’s never done that before.

Still under the limited warranty from the dealer I bought it from just 2 weeks ago; they want me to tow it to their shop on Monday. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's not something major since the warranty only covers 50% of parts & labor.

OK, update. I went out this morning and the truck started right up, smooth idle, no messages in the DIC on the dash. Still had the CEL but no Stabilitrac light. Drove it up the street and back and seemed to run perfect. So I plugged in my scan tool; Same codes again: P0106, P0452 (twice?), P0641. However, this time when I cleared the codes, they stayed cleared. Drove it around the block a few times, switching from 4HI to 4HI Lock and back, turned the Stabiltrac off and on... Running perfect, no codes, no CEL, no error messages. What the H3LL is going on? Still gonna take it in to the shop on Monday for a once over, but not confident that anything will be found now. At least I don't have to tow it in. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

9 times out of 10 those symptoms are from poor battery connections from the flimsy OEM terminals, or from a stale battery; either results in low voltage that confuses the computer. Install some decent zinc terminals and, if the battery is more than 4 years old, it's probably weak and ready for replacement. If the battery is healthy, check the alternator.

Are the lights on the 4wheel selectors buttons on?? Pop the dash cover and check plug ins.

The 4WD selector buttons are working fine, i.e. the button that is engaged is lit, others are not.

I just went out to start it, and it's back to all of the same issues; won't start, error messages for the Stabilitrac, Traction control, Reduced Power, CEL and Stabilitrac light on ...also occasionally get the word OIL in the dash display, even though the oil level is fine. Also noticed that even if I can get it started, the A/C doesn't work; blows hot air.

Lost a source power wire somewhere for sourcing voltage for all those sensors. Oil press, map sensor, maf sensor, throttle position I think all run off of a +5v supply. Could be the ECU, or it could be in the wiring. Will have to divide and conquer troubleshoot to root out the problem.

Do you have access to another ECU anywhere?

Just something to consider: This may not have anything to do with the problems, but when I run trails like that I don't use 4Hi lock, just 4Hi is good enough. I never lock it on dry pavement either. Hope you get it resolved quickly.

Thanks guys. I don't have access to another PCM; not sure if it would need to be year specific ('08 Alpha). It's going in to the shop today (or tomorrow morning). Hopefully they can figure it out. This has really put a damper on my enthusiasm for my brand new (to me) Hummer!

Hang in there its an awesome rig and I wouldn't trade mine for anything. It may be something simple like a bad battery terminal. I'd check those first and the battery. You'll get it solved.

Battery

all will be well with the world when it's replaced... though, H40 has got some pretty good members because their first post is, give or take a bit, pretty much exactly the same as yours. Thus, welcome aboard, replace the battery but stick around after that fixes it.

Well, dropped it off at the shop this morning; keeping my fingers crossed that they find something minor/inexpensive!

I'll definitely be sticking around here.

Got a call from the shop yesterday afternoon; here are the results. #1 the mechanic was able to trace down and find a broken wire at a connector under the hood (sorry, I don’t know which wire or any other details yet; I’ll try to get more when I actually talk to him in person). He fixed that (replaced a connector). #2 the reduced power mode was triggered by the TPS in the throttle body malfunctioning. Turns out that GM has issued a TSB for that part and will cover the repair of it through 10yrs/120,000 miles (NHTSA #10047220, TSB 11273). The mechanic is taking it to the Chevy dealer today for the covered repair/replacement.

Bottom line, the used car dealership where I bought it stepped up to the plate and covered the shop/mechanic 100% (even though they could have charged me 50%) and Chevy is covering the TPS replacement. My cost: $0.

Dang it!!! It's back! I'm starting to think my H3 just doesn't like dirt. Took a short off-road jaunt yesterday afternoon, first time since getting it back. About 5-7 miles in, CEL came on, traction failed - service stabilitrac messages again...AAAAAUUUUUGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!

Haven't had time yet to read any codes. Called the shop and he said it sounds like a wire shorting somewhere; offroad shakes the truck just right to cause the issue. Said he can't get to it till next week sometime, so I'll start looking it over in the meantime. I'm gonna go ahead and change out the stupid OEM battery cable ends, too.

Sorry to hear its back. Fixing those battery connectors will at least eliminate future problems.

Next time you get the DIC "traction failed - service stabilitrac" message, start it up, put it in drive, keep your foot on the brake pedal and have someone tell you if your brakelights are working. If they're not/don't come on, then you have a bad brake pedal lamp switch. If so, let me know and I will post up the GM part # for you.

I've already gone through 3 of them on my H3T and soon my 4th but that's how I know that that brake pedal switch is shot when I start getting that message in the DIC display. $25 part and really easy to replace.

I want to thank everyone on this post & add my recent experience to the list. As part of "My Christmas to me", I sent the PCM on my 06 H3 to PCM of NC for a retune to match the new tire size I was adding. What should have been an easy swap turned into a week long ordeal. When the PCM was reinstalled, the truck wouldn't crank and it was throwing out all kinds of codes. Long story short, an unknown gift from a previous owner was the source of most all my troubles. The locking lever on the center connector and 2 of the 4 locking pegs on the PCM were missing. This was preventing the center connector from making a good connection and causing all the codes I was receiving, and as a result of trying to get the truck to accept the new tune, ran my battery dead. A new battery, clean terminals, and a lot of advice from online posts, PCM of NC, and the service dept at Serra Chev in Bartlett, TN, I was able to get my H3 up and HUMMING once again. Used a nail file to make sure all the pins on the PCM were clean, got a $3.00 tube of dielectric grease from Autozone, greased the pins and squeezed the snot out of the center connector to make sure it was fully seated prior to setting the locks on the 2 remaining pegs with a screwdriver.

Once everything else was hooked-up, she fired-up on the first try and hasn't run this good since I got it last August. Hope this helps someone else on down the line.
