Carry the largest caliber you can control well and take into account that the larger you go, (usually) the less rounds you have.
I carry a Kimber TLE 5" 1911 .45 with 7 and 1. Eight rounds may not be enough for some folks. Some folks want 19 and 1 of 9mm
Way I see it, if you NEED 20 rounds, you're already losing...
Above all else, practice, practice, practice. Do it with the defense round you'll carry. Too many folks practice exclusively with cheap target ammo, then load the good hollow point stuff for self defense, only to find with very bad timing their particular weapon does not like the HP rounds. Failure to feed, eject, double feeds, stovepipes, or complete a full cycle is not something you want to discover when sh!t has hit the fan.
And never, absolutely NEVER, take any advise from anyone using the word "Clip" in reference to anything other than a belt fed weapon.
