Recommendations for my H2 SUT

As some of you know I traded in my H3 for a H2 SUT.

Performance Mods on the H2. Straight pipes, K&N intake and filter. This is it, as from what i can tell.

I've done some searching but i want to know what you guys recommend.

I'm looking into getting a programmer 1st. Brands i should look for or stay away from?

Lastly, i would like to put a good set of headers to compliment the loud a$$ straight pipes. :)

As far as headers, I have the Dynatech long tube headers and they give it a definite performance sound, followed by high flow cats and a flow master 50 series. I believe the Headers were $799, $599 for the hi-flow cats and cross over pipe. I had a custom tune done with an HP Tuner when I did the headers, I had had the Superchips Flashpaq before that and it was good. The Diablo is also a good tuner as you can upload custom tunes with it.

Nice set up.

Thanks for the recs. I'm looking hard at the Superchips Flashpaq. The extra horses will help but what i'm really looking for is re-calibrating the speedo and shift points.

Superchips is located less than an hour from my house in Sanford, Florida. They are a really good group of guys. A friend of mines H3Alpa was the guinea pig rig for the programmer for the H3Alphas.

Do you know what gears they are running with those 41s? Hopefully it has been re-geard to 4.88s. If not you would have noticed the lag. You can check the gear ratio by jacking it up leave one rear wheel on the ground or prevent one rear wheel from spinning and spin the other rear wheel and count the rotations of the pinion gear/drive shaft. Obviously needs to be in neutral to do this. You could also lock the rear and not worry about keep one rear wheel on the ground. There are several various methods on the internet with lots of alternate ways to do this, find a method that works for you.

I'm not sure if it's re-geared. I have the previous owners contact info and plan on calling him.

I've never noticed lag , but I've never driven a H2 before, so i have nothing to compare it to. The truck has no problem pushing the 41's. It really gets up and goes. It makes me think other engine mods where done, but i'm not certain.

I know i made a huge jump from a small inline 5 to a 6.0 v8 but i figured the H2 would be slower with the big tires.

far easier way is to put the vehicle in direct drive (generally 3rd gear on an automatic) drive 60 mph, record the rpms, then use an on-line calculator to do the math.

Or jack up the rear end and rotate the tires 1 revolution and count how many revolutions the driveshaft makes.

I installed Boria Titanium headers, which are great, and the Edge Evolution CTS programmer, which has multiple uses and lots of features, which includes recaliberating for larger tire size and changing for better fuel enconomy or more torque, which are just a few of the functions.

IMHO, do exactly what Big did to his. That setup sounds great, great products too. The Superchips programmer is easy to use and has good customer support if you need it.

You will need to find out if you're-geared too.

Running billy boat short headers, Cali thing. Also have the superchips tuner, bought it from big. Mainly bought it to correct the speedo, 4.88 gears. The 91 tune is nice but gotta run 91 octane. I took it out once, gas went way up. The next day I out the tune back in

I bought the Flashpaq for the gears and tires, but also had the same experience as you with the tune. I ran it all the time on the 91 tune and I knew it made a difference, but didn't realize how much of a difference until I took it off and put back the 87 tune in it when gas was up. I ran the 91 tune from then on until I sold it to you. The custom tune I have is set for 93 octane and it really kicks ass, only regret I have is we could not tune it on a dyno (no 4 wheel dyno close by) and had to do a seat of the pants tune on back roads, so it took a while to dial it in.

I tried looking at the Predator stuff, but think they ran a credit check on me and they kicked me off their website. Yeah, mad expensive. Predator's got some cool stuff, don't get me wrong, but man it's too rich for my blood.

That's crazy. running someones credit to purchase their products?...that's pretty odd.

Maybe you guys can help me, this seems like the right thread and ongoing discussion. I've been looking into tuners lately and not sure if selecting one over another really matters in my case. I don't see myself ever going larger than 37" tires (no re-gearing), and I doubt I'd do any engine mods beyond intake, headers and cat-back exhaust. They pretty much all do the same thing, and while some may be better able to adjust for more engine mods or even larger tires I don't know if there are other differences in tuners I should care about. This will only ever be used on one vehicle so multi-vehicle support isn't an issue.

Superchips Flashpaq (couple different models I've found, perhaps some are just older OOP versions?)
Hypertech Max Energy or Max Energy E-Con (are they even different?)
Edge Evolution CS
DiabloSport inTune
SCT Performance x4
Jet Performance Programmer

I just want to plug the tuner in, select an appropriate tune, perhaps try a couple different ones such as 87 vs 91 octane, adjust speedo if/when I move to 37" tires, change shift firmness and shift points, and be able to go back to stock if needed. I don't want to leave it hooked up, although and instant MPG display might be interesting until I get a feel for how speed affects mpg. Is there really any difference between these for my needs other than cost and cosmetics? I tried to limit the list to sub $400 street price units, with the Edge being slightly more, but if stepping up a bit is going to give superior results I'm open to suggestions.

Most of those tuners will let you do all of that.

I really like the superchips programmer, but unfortunately it can only program up to 38" tires. And the Raptorq isn't a tuner. So i'm leaning heavily towards the Hypertech Max Energy b/c you can program and adjust the speedo, for tires up to 54".

If you really like the superchips hop on their user forum and shoot a quick message to the admin they may be able to upload you firmware update so you can adjust for larger tire sizes. Their customer support is awesome.

In my opinion, the Edge Evolution CS far exceeds all the others. A bit more, but so many options, it's worth it. Options include the ability to add a reverse camera system that can be viewed through the tuner screen, and also an adaptable wiring harness that you can connect exterior and/or interior lighting, etc, and it can all be controlled through the tuner screen as well!

What if I don't want to leave anything plugged in? Are there any differences outside of using the screen or having other stuff connected to it? Essentially I only want the tuner connected long enough to actually tune my H2. If it does a better job tuning, more options, more pre-configured maps to choose from, better tranny settings, or anything else I'd be interested. Viewing instant mpg would be a nice perk, but only for a week or so.
