If you want a new vehicle with a warranty etc you will have to go with something else. GM saw to that. I have done the Jeep thing and am over that. Don't see another 4x4 out there I have any interest in so I will just keep maintaining the Hummers.

Hey Tim, have you heard anyting bad about the front d44s on the 2011 and later Jeep Rubicons?

Talking with a guy today who was one of the original owners of Moab 4x4, and who just opened up a new shop, and he is replacing these like crazy. It appears they break easier than heck and Jeep will not warranty them when they are broken. And he showed me three. Two had broken brackets (passenger side) and one had a axle tube that was totally crushed. Now I understand trail damage, but he actually said a person is better off getting an X with a rear 44, and having a locker installed, and staying with a 30 up front.

This guy actually has a setup on his Jeep front bumper that holds a complete 44 axle assembly, so he and another guy can go out in the field and replace an axle on site (I imagine that is for rich cusomers).

He went further to state the front 44s are made in china and the 30s were still made in the USA and the 30s made in the USA had 44 made in the USA axle housings. I guess this is new, and I believe he said for 2011 and later vehicles.

This goes with what the owners of the local Outlaw Jeep place told me last year. They went with Wranglers with 44s in the rear and had lockers installed but kept the front stock.

And to add another note. I originally stopped to see if he will do work like welding, mods, etc., to a Hummer and he has no problem. So if anything breaks for people, there is a place to go for repairs; other than Moab 4x4.

Just asking questions, a year is not that far away.

I agree, but that is not necessarily my reason for switching, in fact, I might get a used Jeep or FJ. Just need a four-door with some room in the back.

Jeeps are terrible for cross-country travel and Hummers excel at cross-country travel, but I'm done with that. After my coming fall trip to TN, I never plan on crossing the Mississippi again by vehicle. So my driving will be limited to local states like CO, ID, WY, NM, AZ and NV. Basically, one day drives. And I want the open top feeling again.

The other reason is that Jeep parts are just so damn plentiful; especially in this area. I mean even the parts stores cater to Jeeps, and I can understand why.

Doug, the 44's in front need to be reinforced 2007-2012. inner axle sleeves and outter C gussets are common for those wheel'n their JK's.
Some even truss that axle. When doing this, it's a good time to replace with greasable ball joints as well. 59% increase in strength with inner sleeves and the C gussets will insure you don't bend those. $160 is the avg cost on C's and inner sleeves. Ball joints are $250 for all 4.

Running 37's and running harder trails would be best to upgrade to an outter/ complete gusset kit if you plan to pound that truck.

I'll be doing a wrietup sometime this winter on this build thread including a full belly skid system, control arm skids, rear shock skids, evap skid, C gussets, inner axle sleeves, rear diff slider, diff covers. These are all need items on a JK that will get put through it paces to help insure you are well protected for harder wheeling like we do in Moab.

So, you are saying those worthless product engineers from GM went to work for Chrysler....:giggle:

finally going to start this coming weekend. I cannot lift anything for another 3 to 4 weeks, so I get to watch my buds work on my rig!

picked up the 3.5 aev lift with high-steer kit, Bilstein 5100's, Bilstein steering stabilzer, Procal (adjusts for tires size, shift point, etc).

I have 4 35" BFg AT's (Thanks Dave). picking the 5th one up on Friday and having them mounted on the stock wheels for now. I plan to run either Walker Evans or Hutchinson beadlocks this coming Summer with 37's once i can save up some funds.

Sinc ei am using the stock wheels, I am installing 1.50" ST wheelspacers to allow for proper clearance. will be addin XD wheels on these AT's ina couple months to have the proper offset. need more funds to do that.

So, that's the first stage for the lift and tires.

Nice tim! Glad to see the build getting started. Hate to admit it, but i've been tossing around the idea of selling my h3. Drove a JK for kicks and giggles the other day, and man that is a weird view out the drivers seat. The hood/front end just sort of dives off. Don't know how to explain it, i'm sure you know what i'm talking about though :emb:. Either way, they are sweet rides. Not sure if i will sell it, or what i would buy if i do. Anyways, looking forward to the "timgco" JK.

P.s. Been loving the gobi stealth! Carried some gear up there out into the little sahara, as well as to throw away all the packaging.

yeah, it's weird not having the narrow windows and not seeing the hood..unless you sit up higher. it does come in handy on the trails a little though.

How was little Sarah? aka Little Moab? I forgot what it's called. I used to go down there by Utah Lake and wheel/ camp with freinds. It's been a long time though. I'm glad the GOBi worked out and thanks again for the business. ...hope to see you in April.

Yeah i can totally see how on the trails it would be an advantage, at times with out a spotter i have to hop out too see exactly whats over the 3's hood. Didn't know you've been out there, little moab is great fun, there's always crazy rigs out there too willing to try the hardest lines. Whenever we do rc crawling competitions out there i always play around on the rocks in the 3. The little sahara i was referring to is out by the sand dunes- cherry creek to be exact. I didn't do much wheeling other than around where i unloaded and geared up. I went out there to ride dirt bikes. I have a bike carrier for the hitch, and threw my gear up top on the gobi just cause i could . All in all, i'm going to keep the 3. Need to get my UCP ordered up, should be out there in April. I've got a buddy with a nice TJ that wants to come as well. Looking forward to it!

got the garage all cleaned up today and all parts/ hardware is now in. I also got the 35" spare mounted up today and set up the rear mount to accept the 35 to work with the stock bumper. Fits like a glove. lol. I used a 1.25" wheel spacer and RockHard L plate mount with LED light. same one that a couple of members used on their H3's. Overall it's good accessory and get's that L plate away from the rocks.

moving my evap can, mounting wheel spacers, getting the 35's mounted up on Friday....as long as Discount Tire is open. snowstorm just hit. also going to start on the lift.

...couple quick pics. I still need to flex it up to make sure the breaklines clear OK. they should, I made brackets to extend the lowers off the axle up front.

woohoo, all my skids showed up today.

LCA front skids to weld on and than paint up. these really reinforce those arms and provide for a nice slider.
The other box is the rear lower shocks mount skids. EVO also makes a set that raises the shock mount up 3", but would require limiting straps. So I decided to just reinforce what is there. Weld 'em on and rattle can them.

The other 3 monsters are for the oil pan, trans/ trans line, crossmember replacment/ bugle skid.

Sounds like you'll have fewer problems in the rocks vs. the nearly stock H2 you last brought to Moab. :)
