Tried all sorts of tuning, don't remember the numbers. Here's the new setup, stolen idea if Dwaine's as set up on Bigunits

Hmm, so, couple of things:

How is that angle bracket attached to the rood rack? Is there *good* electrical connection between it and the roof rack?

The piece of the bracket that point up: Is that necessary? It's awfully close to the base of the antenna which in this type of setup will radiate quite a bit. -This, too, could cause all sorts of odd SWR readings, bad impedance, etc. -These are the two things I'd start by eliminating if it was my setup

i'm still waiting on tires to ship that were supposed to be here two weeks ago :gaah:

NEO's getting new rubbers....

Hey, told you about the NEO2 plate on a red H3 down the street. Yesterday, when walking the dog, there was a green 06 H3 in a driveway. Lot of H3s in this area (also a heck of a lot of Aztecs and old VW beetles).

Hey Doug, how deep's that snow? i remember you mentioning the NEO2, that's funny about the green one. so there's a bunch of Walter White wannabee's in their Aztecs and i would guess a bunch of hippies in the VW's? sounds like Moab. we have been in the 70's for a couple of weeks now, so get down here to thaw out, see you soon.

So far no cat pee odor from the houses where the Aztecs are parked.

No snow here in the valley; and very little in the surround mountains. not sure about the over 9K mountains to the west and east. Working on the trailer getting it ready for the long summer camping months.

I hear another tourist killed in Grand County. Ran his ATV off a 65-foot cliff....and drunk.....

Mikkel, the vertical piece might end up being an issue, I don't know. It's to allow the antenna to lay flat when not in use. The cable doesn't disconnect from the base

ATVers falling out of the sky i didn't hear about that but have been super busy, Bikes last weekend and marathon this weekend.

Just ordered two new front half shafts from hummer parts guy 275.00 each, can't believe others are selling them for 475.00 and up... and i got a boot for the one that's on there now. so who's up for wrenchin on easter sunday? My cousin and kids are comming in on tue and we'll be renting a RZR for them. so plan on going out to the sand dunes on wed or running something harder in a smaller group and then the sand flats area on thurs. fins and maybe part of hells or something. as usual we'll play it by ear and see where the campfire decisions take us. bedrooms are full tue. wed. and thurs. nights but have floor space and camping for my Flops  see everyone soon

How is the electrical connection / grounding between the bracket and the roof rack?

Not sure how these magnet mounts ground themselves. Except for the layer of paint, there's a good ground to the roof rack and the rack goes straight to the body, so that grounds well.

SWR #s, as Laguna hinted, are a bit weird. Really on 1, then high on 40. Trimmed the antenna a tiny bit and the numbers reversed. Can't get steady numbers, but seems to be working

Mag mounts generally form a capacitor between its base and the underlying metal surface. Most likely, the capacitor formed in your case would (in theory at least) have a very very low impedance at around 27Mhz.

You say "except for for the layer of paint". -What does that mean? Is there a bare metal-to-metal connection between the bracket and the roof rack? The photos look like there might be both paint on the bracket and coating on the roof rack...?

Rack is powder-coated, no way around that. Bracket had tacky paint when mounted. Screws (countersunk) probably pushed away paint, and there are washers contacting the rack (with powdercoat). Paint may have been displaced when mounted on the rack.

I did this as I couldn't tune the other setup either, but I left it in place as a backup. Twice as good to have two wonky setups, right?

Are you able to move the antenna to a piece of your roof, just as a test? That ought to narrow down the possibilities quite a bit....

Yeah, we can play with it in Moab. Well, you can play with it while I sit back and sip some whiskey. :drink:

I seem to recall there are internally grounded antennas available that might work better with your powder coated mounts.

Not unusual, it was someone from CO. I still get phone calls from the old crew at work when something unusual happens on BLM lands....:)

Were those shafts for the H1?

Finally got the PTO signed off. Really, just need to fix the door handles on the passenger door (cold weather makes for brittle plastic brackets), pull the trailer hitch, and see what I can do about the injector that decided to spring a leak because parts finally got here, and if I have time track down the electrical gremlins (who needs gauges?!). Should probably put the skid plates back on, too, though I'm not planning on hitting anything tough.

Not quite sure if we're heading out Saturday or Sunday, but we'll be down there at some point. :)

Lauren wanted me to ask if/when we should bring or make stuff for a potluck.
