Motor oil preference?

Hello all!

I did a search on the forums, but, didn't see what I was looking for. I'm getting an oil change done soon for the H3, and was curious what everyone else was running in theirs? I'm debating a choice between putting NAPA full synthetic 5w-30 in it, or having a Chevy dealership do an ACDelco full synthetic change on it for a little over $40.00.

What do you folks like running in yours? Any issues or problems with certain oil products? I currently don't drive too many miles in a year. Maybe 6000-8000 miles or so. So, high mileage isn't a concern. Thanks for your input!

Mobil 1 5W-30 full synthetic is my choice. My engine has 153,000 miles on it so I go with the high mileage formula.

Just regular Dino oil. For dinner reason I could never get the dealer to put in synthetic. Especially when doing warranty work. Think the back and forth helped the demise of that engine.
It calls for regular Dino oil and that's all I'll pay for now.

Usually Mobil 1. Usually on sale at either Costco or Walmart. If you're doing it yourself, it's not much more money than dino oil. If you're going to a shop, it's a lot more. But what I've also done is brought my own oil (and filter) to a shop and asked them to change it with my oil for $20, or approx. whatever they charge for a dino oil change. We both come out ahead financially.

Thanks for all the replies. Mobil 1 seems to be the preferred choice with everyone. :) I'm not able to do it myself, so, I might just buy the oil and have a shop do it.

Actually, I luv getting a great sale. So which ever store / brand is the best rebate, sale gets the nod.
Recently we picked up a case of 5w30 synthetic blend for $28 ish and had a $24 mail in rebate. Oil filters ran $8 so...... Two vehicles $12 Lol! Pretty good!

I usually use the Bosch premium filter (it's black), it's very high quality and not too expensive. I used to be able to get them at Walmart (also the cheapest place to get oil I've found) but they seem to have decided to stop carrying them by me (they probably make more money from Fram). I think this last time though they had the AC Delco filters which are also pretty decent. Pretty sure that's what I got this last time.

Thanks again for all the replies, folks! Think I might join the crowd and use Mobil 1. I've known how good it is for many years, but I've also been doing research on it the last couple of days. Truly outstanding stuff.

I'm also a member of an oil forum (BobIsTheOilGuy), and most of those folks swear by Mobil 1. Lots of impressive automotive stories using it. I want my H3 to last me a long time, so, I'll start using stuff that has a good record attached to it. :)

I'm also good with the AC Delco filters and they are affordable. I like the BITOG forum - lots of great info on there once you get past the fighting on levels of magnesium, kryptonite and the other debates.

It you wanted to get really analytical, start getting your oil analyzed after each oil change, and change brands to see if there's any difference.

Yeah, I enjoy the info on BITOG. Taught me quite a bit about certain oils & filters, although, I don't know squat about what's in oil or what's good or bad about it. Did get into a pissing match when I asked about oil suggestions on the H3. A couple of them told me I was stupid to buy not only a Hummer, but a 10 year old one. Ah well, can't please everyone.

And x2 on the AC Delco filters. Always seemed to be stout filters. Got a PF61 ready to go on the "Falcon" tomorrow, when I take it in for the oil change.

NAPA (made by Wix), Wix, Purolator, AC Delco, just to name some, but for Pete's sakes, stay away from Frams.

Yes they are cheap to buy, and as such, you get what you pay for. A total piece of junk. Over the years I have heard nothing but problems w/them, from both owners and mechanics alike. They have a history of the filter element disintegrating.

It's funny how people will spend the money on good oil, and yet are cheap when it goes to the oil filter.

Mobil 1 and K&N are also excellent filters ............even if you buy them at Walmart! Also agree that FRAM should be avoided. Have a friend that had one come apart where the can is coined to the base and almost lost the engine in his Vette.
