Hello all, I am new to the forum. I've started exploring the mountains around us with my 3 kids who love to be in the outdoors. With all this backroads traveling it has become time to start plans for our first rig. Been back and forth plenty of time on where to start but I've decided to start my plans around the H3. It seems like a very good choice for on-road/off-road as well as size. No plans to do any hardcore off-roading (yet), we just need to be able to get in and out of the mountains for our hiking/shooting/exploring adventures. I'm seeing plenty of options out there but was wondering if you have any recommendations on where to start my plans; years, models, pros/cons, accessories, tires...

Thanks for making me a part of the community!

2008+, Alpha or Championship Edition with the Offroad/Adventure Package

The majority that I see for sale around here are 06-07, obviously the engine got a little larger in 07 but what are the advantages of going up to 08+? like everything else money is always an object and I'd rather save some money to be able to do some upgrades/projects on it.

If truly no hard off roading is in your future then I would say an 08' Alpha (5.3l) should be sufficient. The adventure package with the rear (06+) and front (09+) lockers is a great addition but the unlocked/non-adventure rigs should do fine as well.

I have an 06 Adventure (3.5l) which works good for my intentions, which is to drive on roads/highways slowly and crawl on rocks even slower. I am however hoping to add an 09-10 H3T Alpha/Adventure rig in the next 6 months, assuming I can find a suitable rig available at that time. I really don't "need" the Alpha however for longevity and a smoother ride I would opt for the 5.3 over the 3.5 engine.

Ohio huh? Grew up just north of Columbus, lived there until several years ago and my parents still live in Ostrander. How's the winter weather treating you back there?

welcome! definitely try to find an alpha because if you ever do decide to do more aggressive off-roading it can handle a small lift and 35's much nicer! my h3 was 06 with the I5 on 35's and it was a dog going up hill. I guess there is now a turbo kit for i5 h3's for about 1300
