New motor

yes, there is a piece like that, are you referring to this?

This isnt my picture but it looks like this

As for drilling and tapping I really really didnt want to do that into the top of the block and was a last option. I havent looked at the piece in the picture closely under my truck yet but it is removable so if I had to drill and tap it that is a WAY safer option.

a T fitting is an option too...Thanks for all the input so far guys and to anyone else reading this, dont consider this v8 related. I5 guys can benefit from this too knowing your engine vitals is important. Its crazy we live in a society where we have ditched a good ole gauge in favor of a big red tea kettle looking light. Its also just as crazy that you can lose pressure and destroy a motor faster then that light can turn on so having a gauge is a good thing to add.

I havent driven it since the oil light came but I did have to move it out of the driveway and the oil light didnt come on. I did do a google search and this issue seems more common then broken H3 front diffs (that comment is for you 4speed :)) there are literally hundreds and hundreds of posts that just continue on about vehicles with 5.3s that had their oil light come on then they turn off the motor start it back up and it goes away and its fine. Supposedly those sensors go out and malfunction like nobody's business but I am not driving it till I get a gauge on it. Im not gonna take a chance even though its running fine and has oil.

That is exactly the part I meant. And I knew I came across it somewhere else. A C5 Corvette uses that part #12551587 that is drilled and tapped for an engine oil temp sensor. You can't get much better than a factory design on the idea for a gauge at this location.

thank you!

So yesterday I installed 2 pusher fans like the South African H3s have. Alpha owners tend to mention that their 3s run a bit hot and sennin and amrg who have South African models claim those pusher fans help a ton! I have them mounted just not wired up yet. I have some time, it's not too hot out yet. They will be on a manual switch. I want to be able to turn them off for water crossings and have full control of them.

Today I will get some quotes on getting the exhaust bent up. I just need them to get it past the tank and under the t case. I can do the rest but if the price is right I'll have them go all the way back.

Other then that I gotta go back down to my buddy's place and grab my oil pan for the wall of shame and good memories and grab the oem harness before someone comes to pick up the old motor. I need the oem harness for some connectors to get the battery light off.

Waiting for the oil pressure gauge stuff to do that also

Also 06 H3 remember to use the larger PH63 vs that stupid PH48 micro filter. Every extra bit helps! did the 5 banger fan shroud not work?

Sorry I haven't updated this...been swamped with school work and extra hours at work. Only 2 weeks left of school

Fan shroud on the I5 doesn't work alpha is specific...

Got my 2 pusher fans mounted, exhaust is done, will get pics...no muffler or resonator right now it just dumps behind the last crossmember for a DD I think I may add a muffler

I want to get exhaust wrap around the exhaust by the trans and t case

Trans temp doesn't work for an alpha but it does for an I5 I searched and it seems no one has a scan gauge trans temp gauge working for an alpha... Bummer!

That means I want a universal a pillar pod for 2 gauges. Trans temp and oil pressure and mold it to the existing h3 pillar

Have driven it some and it kicks ass! The power is awesome mpg is about 12 which seems a tad lower then the i5 but I feel I'm overgeared now. 4.88s would probably be better so I'll just have to jump to bigger tires next set rather then regear again ;)

I also will message diablew tuning in the future scarsman said awesome things about them

Thursday/Friday will be the next time I can work on it but will try to get some time in between then and now

Sounds like a great problem to have!!

You can see what I did for a two guage pod in my build thread (boost pressure & trans temp), I put it over the rear view mirror just because of the air bags in the A-pillar would be a scary place to add extra weight.

He may not have Air Bags in the A Pillar. That was an option till 08. Heck of a build.

thank you, and no a pillar air bags for me since I am an 06.

Ramrod, how did u set up your sending unit in the trans? Is getting temp from the above the pan? Is that a predrilled and threaded spot?

I have seen that most people have had issues setting up their alpha with the trans temp gauge minus best4x4. Weird...

4L60E? Don't those have a diagnostic fluid port on the side just like the 4L80E's? That's where I plugged in my trans temp gauge.

The temp definitely makes it to the ecu since I'm sure that temp is used to control the torque converter lockup so I should be accessable somehow. I have a scanguage but never set it up for trans temp.

I'll probably put one in the access port.

Scan gauge on 06s use GM VPW protocol and it worked later years used CAN. It seems as if all 5 cyl people can set their scan gauge up and have it work. Alpha people seem to have issues with it, except best4x4.

I've tried all the configurations. It's weird....I got one to read but it read 32 degrees all the time which other 5.3 people have complained about also. I know the computer knows, but for some reason the scan gauge doesn't wanna show it. Scan gauge does mention in their manual sometimes it doesn't read things even though the computer has the info, either way I will get a gauge if I can't get it to work

Hey Chris my son said he drove by your work the other day and saw squeaky parked in the lot , congrats on getting it up and running as a DD now . It's been a bumpy road getting this all done without an instruction manual ( but then again hammers like bumpy roads) . Good job Sir .

Just like abearden said; I used the access port on the drivers side, it is about half way up, its pre-drilled and ready to rock, the sending unit that came with my guage threaded right in no problem!

Scangauge II works on my Alpha. The Scangauge website list two codes to try. One is for the Allison Transmission, and the other isn't. I can't remember which one worked on the Alpha, but once I found the right one my trans temps work on both my H3's 5.3L & 3.7L.

Weird about the fan shroud, I had my 5.3L and 3.7L shrouds out next to each other once and the only difference I saw was the 3.7's rotated vs the 5.3L's being fixed, but maybe it's a 1/2 smaller vs the 5.3L.

I have a single 10inch pusher fan mounted on my Alpha using the wiring my $$$ worthless Efan came with so the fan will come on when the AC pressure reaches a certain PSI or when the engine temp reaches around 195F. So far temps are 193-200F, but we'll see how it goes when it gets hotter out. I'm also still running the Ford 9 blade metal fan vs the OEM 11 blade plastic fan.

Have you changed out the oil pressure switch? When I bought my wife's H3 I changed the oil, noticed they had the wrong filter on it (way to small), and after the oil change the idiot light and DIC would come on which of coarse scared me half to death since I hadn't even owned a weekend yet!!!

I could tell the engine had oil as it sounded fine. Replaced the oil pressure switch (which fell apart upon removal). Slapped in the new one, and I've never had a problem since. I recently just bought myself a 98 Land Rover Discovery Series 1 LSE, and it's oil light would stay on a few seconds after start up (engine once again sounded fine). I also noticed a lot of oil around the timing cover, heads, and oil pan (kinda typical for a LR but it was fresh oil). I used brake clean and traced the leak down to the oil pressure switch, 15.00 later I had the new one installed, and now the light goes off almost instantly, and I now have zero oil leaks. It was full of crap when I tapped on it. I'd change it out and see how that does.

On my 07 when I bought it some idiot had slapped on a much smaller oil filter (thanks previous owner and & a quick lube). Light was not on until I changed the oil and filter with the proper one. Guess I moved some crap around inside the engine..... However the issue was not the filter, but a bad oil pressure switch. On the 5.3L you can use a PF63 vs the PF48 oil filter. It's a larger filter and works perfect. I can't believe how small the filter is on the 5.3L.... I'd seriously change out the oil pressure switch for under 20.00 and make sure it's good. It was causing havoc on my 07 H3, 98 LR D1, and 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Simple quick fix and no more idiot light problem or scares!

Yep it sure is. I checked and triple checked and GM even had a TSB on newer vehicles using the PF48 to start using the PF63. I stumbled across the info on a Chevy truck forum and I've been using the PF63 or equivalent ever since. I can find the AC Delco PF63's at Walmart, K&N at Oreilly's, and the Mobil1 at Auto Zone.

XGauge Input Settings GM Specific CANSF Protocol:

07E0221940(01) 046205190640
3008
00090005FFD8
07E2221940(01)
0462051906403008 00090005FFD8

Those are the two CANSF Protocol's you can use to setup the TFT with a ScanGauge II. It's been so long I can't remember which one worked with the Alpha, but once I got the right one it's been working ever since. If it still doesn't work only other thing I can think of would be your ScanGauge II's firmware.

i can vouch for b4x4, I spent an hour or two looking up the oil filter stuff and a lot of people say the same thing. it's in a few manuals and stuff, but I don't remember which ones.

Awesome told you it would work!!!! Just takes some tweaking. Wish the ScanGauge was as friendly with a 98 Land Rover Discovery Series 1 haha.
