I have just completed the first day (8 hours) of my "Furlough Friday."
In case it's not widely known, your government civilian employees are the recipients of one day per week off, without pay, courtesy of our elected officials in Congress.
I know that many people feel as though the government employee is nothing more than a parasite sucking on the tit of the government, but let me assure you, none of the employees in my office are coasting for 8-10 hours per day.
Because our congress could not come to an agreement in 2011, the sequestration took effect and the Budget Control Act of 2011 triggered automatic budget cuts across the government. Your defense department has been handed a soup-sandwich and the civilian employees are being cut 20% of our salary over the next ten weeks. (Thank you Sir, may I have another?)
Well yes, yes you can have another. In FY14 we can expect that the operating budgets will be cut by a minimum of 10-20%. Can you say Reduction in Force?
The sequestration and the Budget Control Act of 2011 calls for 10 years of cuts. This is just the start. Furloughs today, RIF's in the coming years.
Big deal you say? Well the areas with high concentrations of government employees is impacted by a 20% reduction in income because those people furloughed will be spending less in the shops in the local areas. Less money spent means less sales taxes; less taxes means less money back into the local government for fire/police and roads.
What isn't cut? The welfare programs. Oh NOOOOOOO, we cannot cut the welfare programs. Those poor people depend on that money to eat.
